(Bloomberg) Congress approved the waiver needed for Lloyd Austin to serve as President Joe Biden’s defense secretary, a key step toward making the retired Army general the first Black leader of the Pentagon.
The House voted 326-78 on Thursday to pass the waiver exempting Austin, who left the military in 2016, from a law that bars officers from the Defense Department’s top civilian post for seven years after retiring. The Senate swiftly followed with a vote of 69-27.
The Senate has yet to act on confirming Austin’s nomination, although Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said a vote would occur on Friday morning. The Senate Armed Services Committee approved Austin’s confirmation earlier Thursday. ....

(Bloomberg) Congress will meet Wednesday to certify Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election, with scores of Republican lawmakers preparing to challenge the tally in a number of states during what is normally a largely ceremonial event.
The objections, which are provided for under the law, could well delay the proceedings but are not likely to affect the outcome. The challenges have the enthusiastic support of President Donald Trump even as they expose divisions in the GOP and create a dilemma for Vice President Mike Pence, who will preside over the session. Here’s what to expect as the day unfolds. ....

(Bloomberg) Congress handed Donald Trump a major, bipartisan defeat in the waning days of his presidency, as the Republican-led Senate voted to override his veto of a $740.5 billion defense policy bill.
It’s the first time one of Trump’s vetoes has been surmounted. On Twitter, in his first response to the override, Trump said the Senate “missed an opportunity,” terming the effort “Pathetic!!”
The final tally was 81 to 13, easily exceeding the two-thirds threshold needed to override a veto, with support coming from both Republicans and Democrats as it did earlier in the House. The massive annual defense authorization measure now will become law. ....

Senate GOP Has Stimulus Dilemma as Democrats Side With Trump

Senate GOP in Stimulus Bind With Trump Ramping Up Pressure

(Bloomberg) Republicans will likely block Democrats’ attempts to have the Senate quickly follow the House in boosting stimulus payments for most Americans to $2,000, even as President Donald Trump ramped up pressure on the GOP to back bigger checks.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said he’ll seek unanimous consent Tuesday to pass a bill approved by a wide margin in the House, which would increase the payments from the $600 in the pandemic relief legislation Trump signed on Sunday. The move is expected to draw an objection from a Republican. ....

House Backs Trump on $2,000 Checks, Daring Senate to Follow

House Backs Trump on $2,000 Checks, Daring Senate to Follow

(Bloomberg) The House on Monday passed a bill replacing the $600 stimulus checks in the newly enacted virus relief bill with $2,000 payments, as Democrats and moderate Republicans voted in favor of a proposal backed by President Donald Trump.
The bill cleared the chamber on a 275 to 134 vote, reaching the two-thirds majority needed for the expedited procedure used Monday.
It now heads to the Senate where it will create a political dilemma for Republicans. Many of them previously opposed stimulus payments larger than the $600 in the existing law, in part over concerns about the price tag. Bumping the payments to $2,000 would cost roughly $464 billion. But Trump’s stamp of approval still has sway with GOP voters. ....
