Grant brings new microfilm scanners to Moberly library

Thanks to the Missouri State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Little Dixie Regional Libraries in Moberly and Paris are the owners of two brand new microfilm machines.
Microfilm allows users to view old newspapers, phone books, city directories, maps, and magazines on a small roll of film.
LDRL Director Rachel Grime on Wednesday said the library has microfilm copies of most all newspapers that have been published in both Randolph and Monroe counties dating back to the 1800s for patrons to read or research story items of interest. Not all newspapers and other historical documents are digitized making the microfilm reader essential to any historical researcher. ....

April 4, 1980: Musician Red Sovine died in Nashville. Sovine, born Woodrow Wilson Sovine in Charleston, gained country music fame for his recitations, especially those incorporating sentimental truck driver themes.
April 5, 1856: Booker T. Washington was born a slave in Virginia. In 1865, he moved with his family to Malden to join his stepfather, who had escaped from slavery during the war.
April 5, 2010: An explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County killed 29 workers. Only two men escaped from the mine alive. It was the country’s worst coal mining disaster since November 20, 1968, when the Consol No. 9 Mine at Farmington, West Virginia, exploded, killing 78 workers. ....

There have been well over 6,000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes which caused an estimated loss of 30,000 mariner’s (sailors) lives. It is believed that there are over 500 wrecks in Lake Superior, most of which are undiscovered.
By far the most famous shipwreck in the history of the Great Lakes was the giant freighter Edmund Fitzgerald, which has become truly legendary in large part due to a haunting ballad written and sung by Canadian Gordon Lightfoot. The song is called “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
Five hundred years from now they will still be playing that song around the Great Lakes every November. The Fitzgerald went down on November 10, 1975 in a hurricane-like storm on Lake Superior. The entire crew of 29 men perished. When the Fitzgerald was built in 1958 it was the largest ship on the entire Great Lakes. It remains the largest ship to ever sink on the Great Lakes.
