Random alley Labor News:

Union Workers at Abbott and Phillips Eye Institute Hold Strike Vote:
After Allina Hospitals refused a to extend an expiring contract for union workers, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare workers in negotiations at Allina/Abbott Northwestern Hospital/Phillips Eye Institute voted at the end of March to decide whether to authorize an Unfair Labor Practices Strike against Allina. Results of the strike authorization vote were too late for print. According to the union, Allina has declined to negotiate health and safety issues. SEIU-represented workers at Abbott went on a two-day Strike last October over safety and COVID-pay. SEIU workers at Children’s Hospital are in separate contract negotiations, where key issues are pay and safe staffing levels. ....

From Pollution to the Pandemic, Racial Equity Eludes Louisiana's Cancer Alley Community

Mary Hampton, president of the Concerned Citizens of St. John the Baptist Parish, a community group in Louisiana fighting for clean air, opted to do everything in her power to avoid getting the coronavirus after Robert Taylor, the group’s founder, was hospitalized with COVID-19 earlier this year. So she got vaccinated as soon as she could. “Either the vaccine is going to make me sick,” Hampton reasoned, “or the virus is going to kill me.”
Like many African Americans, Hampton’s hesitation around vaccination stems from hearing about the way Black men were left to suffer during the Tuskegee syphilis study, an experiment between 1932 and 1972 which withheld lifesaving treatment, and from her own lifetime of experiences with unequal healthcare access. She told me that she and her family often had to wait hours to see a doctor for ....

Environmental justice activist Sharon Lavigne stands outside her home in St. James, Louisiana, on February 23, 2021.
Sharon Lavigne has lived in St. James Parish, Louisiana, a predominantly Black community, all her life. She remembers when the air wasn’t covered with thick gray smog, when the water was still safe to drink, when the gardens were productive and fertile.
But now, she says, “we are sick and we are dying.”
Lavigne has watched her neighbors die from cancer and suffer from respiratory illnesses. About five years ago, she too was diagnosed with pollution-linked autoimmune hepatitis, with tests showing she had aluminum inside her body. The reason for the community’s decline in health, environmentalists say, is a burgeoning fossil fuel industry right in their b ....

Let's Hope El Paso Doesn't Have a Gas Shortage Like Toilet Paper

These past couple of days, you may have noticed lines of cars waiting to get gas at the gas stations in El Paso. It seems like El Pasoans are handling the gas situation just like the toilet paper and disinfectant supplies shortage from last year. TheRealFitFamEP even has physical proof on their page of El Paso drivers sitting in long lines waiting to fill up their tanks.
I totally understand people who drive gas guzzlers want to fill up at a decent penny one last time before prices rise. But some El Paso drivers are not handling it very well since they re not only filling up their tanks but also 3 or 4 gasoline containers. The longest lines of cars you saw waiting for gas were at Sam s Club and Costco lately. ....

Strike underway at St. Paul refinery

union members picket outside Marathon refinery in St. Paul
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – 200 workers at the Marathon Refinery in St. Paul say they are striking over workplace safety concerns.
A spokesperson for Teamsters Local 120 says the company is demanding operation changes that will create major safety concerns. The union says Marathon won’t bargain over the changes and their impacts. Workers are worried that the company wants to use lowest-bidder subcontractors for jobs that are safety-sensitive. They say more workload could be added to already-overloaded positions.
The union points to the April 2018 explosion at the Husky Refinery in Superior, Wisconsin as an example of what could happen. ....
