An advisory committee voted unanimously Friday to recommend authorizing a COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson for use in adults, paving the way for an expected Food and Drug Administration authorization within the next few days.
Johnson & Johnson agreed to provide 100 million doses of its single-shot vaccine in the U.S. by June, including 20 million by the end of March. Those doses will add to the 300 million doses Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna each have promised to deliver by the end of July.
The vaccine was shown to be 72% effective in a U.S. trial in which all ethnic, racial and age groups benefited about the same, and was shown to be 85% effective in preventing the most severe disease. ....

COVID news: CDC warns of case increase; FDA to review J&J vaccine

Colombia's COVID-19 vaccine campaign aims to protect 35 million

BOGOTA, Colombia – More than 56,000 people in Colombia have died of COVID-19 during the pandemic. Colombian President Ivan Duque’s goal is to inoculate about 35 million people this year.
Yellow DHL planes have been delivering COVID-19 vaccines to Bogota since last week. On Saturday, Duque welcomed the arrival of a shipment of Sinovac Biotech from China. The first delivery of the Pfizer-BioNTech doses arrived from Miami in a Boeing 767-300F on Feb. 15.
“I want to thank God; I want to thank science,” Duque said in Spanish, as he stood behind a podium at El Dorado Luis Carlos Galan Sarmiento International Airport. ....

Colombia, Mexico roll out vaccine, Brazil suffers shortages


Head nurse Veronica Luz Machado, who for months has battled the coronavirus pandemic from an intensive care unit in the northern Colombian city of Sincelejo, became the first person in the Andean country to receive a COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday.
Beginning with Machado, Colombia will kick off its plan to immunise 35.2 million people with vaccines acquired through a raft of bilateral deals as well as the World Health Organization-backed COVAX mechanism.
“The pandemic really changed our lives completely, particularly for me and my colleagues, because we were facing an unknown virus, we didn’t know how to respond,” Machado, who works at Hospital Universitario, said in a government broadcast earlier this week, before receiving the first shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s two-dose vaccine. ....
