Colorado's Independent Redistricting Commission Removes Its Chairman For Posts On Election Rigging And Coronavirus

Samantha Rhodes completes her civic duty for the November, 2020 election outside of the Carla Madison Rec Center on Colfax Avenue. Oct. 16, 2020.
The first meetings of Colorado’s independent congressional redistricting commission were supposed to be about dry, bureaucratic tasks like hiring attorneys and adopting rules of order.
Instead, the group spent nearly two hours on Monday stripping its newly appointed chairman, Danny Moore, of his leadership role because of his public comments questioning the results of the 2020 election and his description of COVID-19 as a “Chinese” virus.
Moore, an entrepreneur and a Republican, is one of 12 bipartisan commissioners who are responsible for drawing a new electoral map for Colorado’s congressional districts. The other commissioners appointed him as chair last month; soon after, 9News and other outlets reported on Moore’s earlier social media posts about the election. ....

Senators Debate Redistricting For Southern Illinois

Listen now.
Legislators debated the procedure for re-drawing Illinois’ legislative and congressional districts at a hearing Thursday night.
The main issue under discussion was the June 30th deadline set forth in the state constitution. Republicans, including Senator Terri Bryant, said the state should wait for full Census data to be available in fall, and that the constitution allows for such a delay, with a final deadline in October.
“Clearly we’re going to have to have a special session to approve the congressional maps. So I’m just wondering why, when that is the case, we have to rush into approving maps when clearly our Constitutional deadline is not June 30, it’s in October,” Bryant said. “Unless we want to use the June 30th deadline so that these will be totally partisan maps.” ....

The greatest threat to our democracy does not reside in the White House

It s been over three months since the Electoral College confirmed Joe Biden
The importance of this election was most apparent with over 100 million people voting early and over two-thirds of eligible voters participating, the highest percentage since 1900. What got lost during this election season amidst the COVID-19 chaos is the decennial census. The results of the census will lead to a reallocation of each state’s number of congressional seats and a redrawing of congressional and state House district maps.
How are congressional maps drawn? In 33 states, state legislatures draw congressional as well as state House district maps, with most allowing for gubernatorial veto power. The party that holds the state legislature majority can draw maps that favor their party, resulting in more elected members in Congress and state Houses. With veto power, governors have the final say in adopted maps. Just a handful of states use independent commissions, allowing for the poss ....

Arizona redistricting panel picks executive director

Arizona redistricting panel picks executive director
By BOB CHRISTIEMarch 17, 2021 GMT
PHOENIX (AP) A top staffer for Phoenix City Councilman Jim Waring has been chosen to be the executive director of the commission that will redraw Arizona’s political district lines this year.
The five-member commission chose Brian Schmitt for the job after interviewing five finalists in a day-long session Tuesday.
The 3-2 vote to hire Schmitt, who was linked to Republican campaigns last year and in 2018, was opposed by the two Democratic members of the commission.
But in his interview, Schmitt said he had been asked “as kind of a one-off” to help organize last year’s traditional Republican campaign finale at the Yavapai County Courthouse in Prescott. Federal records from former Sen. Martha McSally’s campaign showed he received a payment of more than $63,000 three days after the Nov. 3, 2020, general election. ....
