Worcester honors lives lost in the Vietnam War with ceremony

The Massachusetts Vietnam Memorial at Worcester s Green Hill Park is a great place for reflection and learning.
The memorial is separated into three different places.
The Place of Flags has the American flag, the Massachusetts state flag, and a POW/MIA flag. 
The Place of Words has text etched in granite, taken directly from handwritten letters sent home by servicemembers who died while serving in Vietnam. 
And finally, the Place of Names lists all the names of Massachusetts residents who died in combat, as a result of wounds while in Vietnam or are still MIA.  ....

Memorial Day Events Planned Across Massachusetts for Monday

WBZ NewsRadio) Despite the rainy forecast, there will be no shortage of events to attend this Memorial Day. That includes parades, memorials, and other celebrations of the nation s military forces.
Parades:
Ceremonies and Tributes:
Watertown will have an in-person ceremony at 11:00 AM, and Cambridge will air a virtual remembrance video at that time.
In Worcester, special tributes are being held in several locations at different times at Hope Cemetery, the Massachusetts Vietnam Memorial, and also at the Korean War Memorial
All-Weekend Events:
The annual Massachusetts Military Heroes Garden of Flags will be up on Memorial Day in Boston Common. The iconic display is planted every year to commemorate every fallen member of the military from Massachusetts, and features 37,000 flags. ....

There are a couple of words that some people constantly misuse that really get under my skin. I’m not talking about common grammatical mistakes. I’m talking about taking simple words and distorting their meaning to the point where they become almost meaningless.
Those two words are “hero” and “patriot.”
Over the years, I have given a number of speeches focusing on the subject of heroes. To me, a hero is someone who does something extraordinary, at great risk to themselves, for the benefit of someone else.
When Worcester lost six brave firefighters who rushed into a burning building in search of a homeless couple, I asked that all of the students in the public schools write essays about the true meaning of heroism. I was overwhelmed by the beautiful and touching responses that I was privileged to read. ....

Saturday: At noon, the American Legion Post and the Chester P. Tuttle Post 279, escorted by the Auburn Police Department., will conduct a salute at all 13 veterans squares in town, starting with the first salute and wreath placement at Tuttle Square. 
894 flags were put in the cemeteries on all of the grave markers for their fallen veterans.
There will be no parade and events on Sunday and Monday, said Town Manager Julie Jacobson. 
“The parade and other events had been cancelled due to COVID restrictions, so even with the changes announced last week by the state, it was too late to plan any additional events,” Jacobson said.     ....
