LONDON (Reuters) – Triathlon’s young guns went into lockdown gently knocking at the elite door but emerged by smashing it off its hinges and storming through to totally change the sport’s landscape heading into the Tokyo Olympics.
All professional sport takes place against the backdrop of a constant shedding of ageing performers, nudged off stage by impatient new arrivals, but the absence of any meaningful competition in triathlon for so long has meant the changes have appeared magnified and dramatic.

Brownlee's hopes of Tokyo triathlon defence look doomed after disqualification

Sunday, 6 June 2021
Britain's Alistair Brownlee’s hopes of defending his Olympic triathlon title for a second time at Tokyo 2020o look slim after he was disqualified from the World Triathlon Championship Series leg on his home city of Leeds today.
The 33-year-old London 2012 and Rio 2016 champion, needing a good performance to influence the selectors after struggling with an ankle injury, was first out of the second transition, but although he completed the run he was disqualified “due to unsportsmanlike behaviour during the swim segment.”
He was reported to have "dunked" United Sates  opponent Chase McQueen during the opening leg of the competition.

Meet the Youngest Woman to Make the U.S. Triathlon Team

Slowtwitch.com '); } else { document.write(' While Taylor Knibb had some excellent performances in her first four years in triathlon, the long pandemic hiatus left her out of the spotlight and off the list of pre-race favorites at WTS Yokohama. As the youngest U.S. contender for the second Olympic slot, Knibb‘s chances were seen behind 2019 WTS World Champion Katie Zaferes, highly ranked contender Taylor Spivey, and Summer Rappaport, who previously earned the first U.S. Olympic slot at the Tokyo Qualifying event in 2019. Still, Knibb’s young career record has many high spots: wins at the 2016 and 2017 Junior Women World Championships; a breakthrough 2nd Elite Woman at WTS Edmonton in July 2017; and gold at the September 2018 Under 23 World Championship. In 2019, she was 4th elite woman at WTS Abu Dhabi; 5th at WTS Montreal, a disappointing 16th at the Tokyo Olympic Qualification event and 2nd at the Santo Domingo World Cup.

(Reuters) - Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt won gold at the opening race of the 2021 World Triathlon Championship series in Yokohama on Saturday after American Taylor Knibb crossed the line first in the women’s race to secure her place at the Olympic Games.
A strong performance in the 10 kilometre run phase of the three-discipline event saw Blummenfelt open up a decisive gap over Belgium’s Jelle Geens while Morgan Pearson of the United States finished third.
The race was the first to be held in the World Triathlon Championship series this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
