Pamplin Media Group - Verdict anticipated in Chauvin trial

April 20 2021
Ex-police officer is convicted of killing George Floyd, which touched off a year of Black Lives Matter protests.
The Minneapolis jury has returned a verdict of guilty in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was accused of killing George Floyd 46.
Local reactions ranged from relief to rage on Tuesday, April 20, as the verdict after the verdict was announced around 2:05 p.m. local time.
By 2:09 p.m. cars in downtown Portland began honking and people began shouting in the streets.
The jury's findings:
• Third-Degree Murder: Guilty
Local reactions
Marcus Mundy, executive director of the Oregon-based Coalition of Communities of Color, responded quickly to the verdicts. ""Justice is hard to come by in America. The members of the Coalition of Communities of Color know that all too well," he told Pamplin Media Group. "Today's decision in Minnesota matters, truly, but it is not nearly enough, and it is not even true justice because true justice would not have had a man die for a purported counterfeit $20 bill. That is not ingratitude for today's righteous outcome, but a doleful lament about our fear for what is to come. We are heartened that a reprehensible monster has been adjudged by a jury of his peers unfit to walk among us any longer, but we await the inevitable backlash of grievance that will emerge when those in power realize that a single verdict in a single case is not enough to satisfy over 400 years of mistreatment and woe for African American men, and other folks of color, in America."

One week after Portland Public Schools leaders announced plans to phase elementary and middle schoolers back into classrooms in early April, the union representing district teachers says it’s opposed because reopening schools may put Black, Indigenous and other families of color at high health risk.
The Portland Association of Teachers is demanding the district mount a comprehensive survey of those families before solidifying its plans.

Executive director of Unite Oregon appointed to fill spot vacated by Secretary of State Shemia Fagan
Commissioners representing Multnomah and Clackamas counties unanimously cast votes to approve Kayse Jama as the next state senator to represent District 24, covering portions of east Portland and northern Clackamas County.
"The magnitude of this moment is not lost on me," Jama said. "My journey from a nomadic community in Somalia to the Oregon Senate is a testament to where I come from, the people of our district, and our shared values."
Jama — executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Unite Oregon — will join Oregon's legislative assembly ahead of a session that is expected to take aim at advancing issues of racial justice and fixing systemic inequities further exposed and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Portland parents agree: Distance learning doesn’t hold a candle to the traditional classroom experience. But many are split on how quickly schools should reopen.
“I want my kids back in school desperately,” said Rashelle Chase, a Portland parent who opposes a wide-scale reopening. “It’s been pandemonium.”

Local thought leaders on MLK's legacy in 2021

"Everything that they were fighting for in the 60s — better housing, not to be killed by the police, better opportunities, better education — even though those marches in the spring were predicated on another killing of a black man, they wound up being about all those things, as well. So, I see direct comparisons between the two," Mundy said.
MLK condemned the use of violence but Mundy thinks Dr. King would've loved the peaceful demonstrations centered around social justice.

2020 set the stage for challenging some of the most profound structures and assumptions that this state and country have been built upon—through genocide, land theft, slavery, and colonialism.
The murder of George Floyd and uprisings for Black lives have accelerated changes that community members have been demanding for generations, while the pandemic and economic crisis made racial inequities clearer than ever. Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) leaders and organizers worked with communities to expand the universe of what is possible for racial justice in Oregon.
