Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, attend the Rules Committee markup of the elections, campaign finance and ethics overhaul known as S 1.
Republicans and Democrats on an evenly divided Senate committee demonstrated Tuesday how far apart they are on political spending, voting, campaign finance, lobbying and ethics laws as they debated a sweeping 800-page bill.
Charges of Democrats trying to grab power and allegations that Republicans in statehouses were seeking to disenfranchise minority voters mixed in with debates over how to mandate financial disclosure for political ads without imposing unconstitutional limits on free speech, and how to make voting easier without opening the door to bad actors who could game the system.  ....

Vermont is only state to never sent a woman or minority to Congress

Wilson Ring, Associated Press
It’s the not-so-secret, disturbing-to-many fact of Vermont politics. Despite a reputation as one of the most liberal states, it has never sent a woman or a member of a minority group to Congress. And in its 230-year history, only one woman has served as governor.
Vermont began carrying the mantle as the only state that has not sent a woman to Congress in 2018, after Mississippi Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith was appointed to the U.S. Senate. She was elected to a full term in November.

Former Democratic governors Madeleine Kunin, Howard Dean and Peter Shumlin also signed it. ....

Fixing the Capitol Police | City Journal

Politics and law
Public safety
After the events of January 6, no one could doubt the U.S. Capitol Police’s lack of preparedness. Nor could anyone miss the very public resignation of Chief Steven Sund and the departures of both the Senate and House sergeants-at-arms.
Less attention has been paid, though, to Sund’s claim that House and Senate security officials denied him permission to request that the D.C. National Guard be placed on standby in case he needed quick backup. Sund has stated that House Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving was uncomfortable with the “optics” of declaring an emergency before the demonstration, and that Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Stenger suggested he informally contact the Guard, asking them to “lean forward” and be on alert in case Capitol Police needed their help. Neither of these now-former sergeants-at-arms has responded directly to Sund’s claim. However, Sund’s successor, acting chief Yogananda D. Pittman, confirmed in testi ....
