ArtVan’s Art Therapy among recipients of Maine Women’s Fund grants Fri, 05/28/2021 - 9:15am Mano en Mano received $10,000 for their childcare program. (Photo courtesy Maine Women’s Fund) The Maine Women’s Fund recently announced grants totaling $155,000 for 16 nonprofits that are working to address the most pressing needs of women and girls across the state. From York to Aroostook County, these organizations and leaders are helping shape the post-pandemic future in key areas where the pandemic has further exacerbated existing gender inequalities. Among the distribution is $7,500 for ArtVan’s Art Therapy of Knox, Sagadahoc Androscoggin, Cumberland and York counties.

Share The Maine Public Health Association and the Social Sciences Program at the University of Maine at Augusta have been addressing barriers to health care that people experience through the monthly Zoom panels, Health Equity Dialogues. February focused on challenges that transgender patients face when accessing health care, often more apparent in rural Maine such as Franklin County. Primary concerns expressed by the Feb. 10 panelists included data collection, transphobic attitudes and the lack of trans-competent providers, doctors and medical professionals who have had training and experience working with people who identify as transgender.

Since 1987 the Northern Skies Planetarium has traveled across Maine schools and libraries educating children in an inflatable star theater. The pandemic has created the opportunity for not only children, but families and individuals to learn about astronomy. The Sky Tour will depart the Trails Center Yurt trekking to Saddleback Lake stopping to learn about the night sky. Upon return to the yurt, there will be a warming fire.
