Activists Want A "Safe And Welcoming" Wyandotte County

KCUR
Incumbent Kansas City, Kansas, Mayor David Alvey shared why he is unable to support a "Safe and Welcoming" ordinance last week on Up To Date
An ordinance that could benefit thousands in the Kansas county has yet to make it through the unified government's board of commissioners.
The ordinance would provide identification cards to county residents who lack legal documents including the homeless and those who have served time in prison.
As KCUR has reported, the controversial piece of the ordinance would prohibit local law enforcement coordination with immigration authorities in most cases.
While a number of community leaders favor the ordinance, current Mayor David Alvey says he can't support it due to federal grant contracts the unified government has with the Department of Justice requiring local assistance, a claim leaders of the Safe and Welcoming Wyandotte coalition refute.

Mobile: A Carnival cruise ship docked in the port city Friday so crew members could be vaccinated against COVID-19. With a brass band playing on the wharf, the Carnival Sensation docked at the Mobile Cruise Terminal, where staff members from USA Health planned to go on board to provide first doses for 110 crew members. The ship will return in three weeks for second doses, the city said in a statement. U.S. ports are closed to cruise lines because of the global pandemic, but Mayor Sandy Stimpson said such vaccinations are a major step toward getting the industry back in business. Carnival said crew members have received vaccines at other ports including Miami and Port Canaveral in Florida and Galveston, Texas. Sensation will be based in Mobile offering trips to the western Caribbean once cruises resume, but it’s unclear when that will happen.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Wyandotte County is still struggling to vaccinate its residents against COVID-19, according to Mayor David Alvey, prompting a meeting next week to discuss new national guidance on mask wearing.
Alvey recently told 41 Action News that only about 30% of the county population is vaccinated.
“I do think there’s a lot of people who feel, ‘Hey, I already had the virus and I’m immune to it now,’ so they’re not jumping out to get the vaccine,” Alvey said.
