.-Marianne Boesky Gallery is presenting Dear Future, an exhibition of new paintings by Antone Könst. The artist’s new group of works capture the emotive impact and uncontainable energy of an indefinite future, shifting his portrayed characters between moments of hope, dread, tension, and humor. Dear Future is on view July 29 – September 12, 2021 on the second floor of the gallery’s space in Aspen.
Könst’s paintings are rooted in figuration, presenting people, animals, and even inanimate objects that are imbued with personified feeling and life. As a starting point for his works, Könst frequently calls back to archetypal and art historical imagery, sourced from studied explorations of classical painting, sculpture, pop culture, and lived experience. .- On Friday, July 23, a special pop-up exhibition titled Cemí-Libre opened at the Hope Community, Inc. s Galería del Barrio featuring works by Miguel Luciano created during a three-year Civic Practice Partnership Artist Residency at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Throughout his residency at The Met, Luciano has engaged with the Museum’s archives and collection, foregrounding historic connections between the Museum and East Harlem and exploring the deep activist history of the neighborhood and community. A centerpiece of the exhibition is a sculptural bronze replica of the Taíno Zemí Cohoba Stand (A.D. 974–1027), from The Met’s Arts of the Ancient Americas collection, which Luciano created to present this iconic image of ancestral Caribbean art to the community. .-Blum & Poe presenting the first major U.S. survey of work by Onomichi, Japan-based artist Yukinori Yanagi. This is Yanagi’s fourth presentation with the gallery, following his solo show at Blum & Poe Tokyo in 2019 and his participation in the group exhibitions Parergon: Japanese Art of the 1980s and 1990s (Los Angeles, 2019) and Mountains Carrying Suns (Tokyo, 2021).
Having resided in the U.S. in the late 1980s and 1990s, obtaining his MFA in sculpture from Yale University School of Art in 1990, Yanagi was first recognized on the world stage at the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993 with World Flag Ant Farm (1990).
