John Langdon Cassandra Agredo has grown the soup kitchen at St. Francis Xavier church into the multi-service agency that is Xavier Mission. As the organization’s executive director, Agredo and her team provide an array of services and opportunities to New Yorkers in need. They prefer to be called a “for-impact” instead of a “nonprofit” organization, focusing on things they can change instead of those they can’t. Direct service work has always been a part of Agredo’s life. When she was growing up in Rhode Island, her father worked at the Department of Human Services, and once the first soup kitchen opened, her parents would bring Agredo along while they volunteered. She continued on this path and obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work from Fordham University. Since then, her passion to enact positive change has shone both through her work at Xavier Mission and Hunger Free America, a national organization set to end domestic hunger, where she’s a board member.

An Important Fourth The only scoring for both teams came in the fourth inning. After each team only put up zeros on the scoreboard through three, the Cardinals broke the stalemate with an RBI single. Cardinals catcher Rebecca Chung earned her team’s first hit of the day with a line-drive triple to left field. On the very next pitch from Hightower, Camryn Greenwood capitalized with a soft liner into right field for the RBI single. But the Cardinals’ lead wouldn’t last long. Cheyenne Lindsey and company made sure of that. The Gators Turn A walk and two singles loaded the bases for the Gators with only one out in the home half of the fourth. With Julia Cottrill, Avery Goelz and Jaimie Hoover all on base, Bryn Thomas came up to the bat as a pinch hitter.

They did it for Helen. They wanted to make a difference. Now a determined group of 2020 Colonial Forge High School graduates who lost their friend in a car accident have been recognized with a National Purpose Award for their work to improve Staffordâs rural roads. Their classmate, Helen Wang, was killed in a crash May 16, 2019, on her 17th birthday. After more than a yearâs work to create change, her young activist friends won âBest Student Campaignâ through PR Week, a national trade magazine for the public relations field. The recognition followed many meetings with legislators and the birth of the student-led group, Changing Staffordâs Roads, which culminated in Helenâs Law.
