Peace in the Middle East seems unattainable, and “The Human Factor,” a new documentary by Israeli filmmaker Dror Moreh, explains why.
For every step toward progress, the process takes three steps backward. It starts, of course, with a deep distrust some might say hatred between the Israelis and Palestinians. Reviewed-Oscar-nominated short subjects 2021

It feels like a very long time since I wrote about last year’s Oscar-nominated short subjects, and indeed it’s been slightly
more than a year in 2020, the shorts were released theatrically in January, immediately prior to the Academy’s Feb. 9 awards ceremony. This year, the pandemic has pushed the Oscars all the way to April 25, and the shorts are only now being made available via Rialto Cinemas Elmwood and the Virtual Roxie.
There are a whopping eight films in this year’s animation category, and, to be honest, it’s a fairly weak crop. By far the best of the bunch is Erick Oh’s ....

Retirement isn’t for everyone least of all, it seems, for film directors. Roman Polanski wrapped 2019’s
J’Accuse when he was 86 (whether, as suggested, it’s his last feature remains to be seen); Jean-Luc Godard directed his most recent film at 88, and Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira put them both to shame by working into his 104th year.
