1871  –City of Birmingham founded; now the state’s most populous city, Birmingham was founded at the crossing of two rail lines near one of the world’s richest deposits of minerals.
1873 Birmingham becomes seat of Jefferson County.
–First Colored Baptist Church founded.
Birmingham particularly hard hit by cholera due to the lack of urban infrastructure and the poor housing conditions. At least 128 people died from cholera, which struck in the height of summer and persisted for several weeks. The outbreak caused about half of Birmingham’s 4,000 residents to flee.
1874 – Birmingham Iron Age newspaper in publication.

Before Franklin Florence, the first president of FIGHT, was Walter Cooper and the Young Turks, a small but influential cohort of Black intellectuals who found themselves rudely sidelined as Uncle Toms  after the early 1960s. They in turn represented a more confrontational approach than Charles Lunsford and Van Levy, the city s first Black doctor and dentist, had employed when Rochester s Black population remained minuscule.
(The thread of generational tension goes back even further, in fact. Levy, who arrived in Rochester in 1922, later recalled: There were just some things here that had to be done in 1922 and the local people here, at that time, really had no way of approaching things. )  ....

Since 1995, the Packers and 49ers have played eight playoff games. Bigger Green Bay and San Francisco games from this period seem to have obscured this frigid showdown. Wisconsin native Colin Kaepernick bedeviled the Packers for a second straight year, accounting for 325 yards (98 rushing) and outplaying Aaron Rodgers on this day. After the 49ers held the Packers to a field goal to tie the game at 20, Kaepernick engineered a game-winning drive complete with an 11-yard scamper on third-and-8 to lift the visitors to a
