Projected demographic changes will continue but will not lead to permanent Democratic majorities. Anyone looking to forecast the future of American politics should look to red Florida, not blue California.
At least so said GOP pollster Curt Anderson, who laid out the findings of a new NRSC survey of Hispanic voters in battleground states. The top line from his 34-page slide deck? “The coalition of the ascendant is descending.” The proof? The two senators sitting at the table who won election in a Sun Belt state that has become “substantially less white and more Republican. ....

The president who began his first national campaign by calling Mexicans “rapists,” drug smugglers, and criminals; who labored to build a wall across the U.S.-Mexico border; who separated undocumented children from their parents; who sought in court to end the “Dreamers” program; who maneuvered to reduce virtually every form of legal immigration; and who told Democratic women of color in the House of Representatives to “go back” to where they came from ....

Jilani: Increased support for Trump among Latino men weakens theories on 'demographic destiny'

Journalist Zaid Jilani said Monday that the increased support for former President Trump
Jilani told Hill.TV’s “Rising” that last year s vote undermines the idea that increases in Hispanic and Asian American populations will automatically lead to advantages for the Democratic Party.
Jilani said that before the pandemic, low-wage Latino and Black workers experienced “very good wage growth,” saying the economy “was largely working for them” during the early years of the Trump administration.
“I think the ultimate takeaway is you can’t assume that somebody because of their cultural, ethnic [or] racial background happens to lean a certain way,” he said. “I think that the attitudes of politicians as well as the conditions of the economy, the conditions of politics can actually shift a lot of these voters who are not necessarily a lock for any party.” ....
