This month's new books include titles about the future of the European Union, foreign policy, equality and non-discrimination, and various other subjects.
"This unique collection of data includes concise definitions and explanations relating to all aspects of the European Union. It explains the terminology surrounding the EU, and outlines the roles and significance of its institutions, member countries, foreign relations, programmes and policies, treaties and personalities."
"Using the European Commission’s 2017 White Paper presenting five different scenarios for the future of Europe to 2050 as an organising framework for analysis and debate, the volume reflects upon the drivers of the EU’s future, including its changing place in an evolving world, a transformed economy and society, heightened threats and concerns about security and borders, and questions of trust and legitimacy."

The Afrofeminist Power Dynamics of Data Governance for African Women

The Afrofeminist Power Dynamics of Data Governance for African Women
By Guest Writer on April 6, 2021
Data is a powerful resource to address the myriad of challenges that women face across the African continent. What is counted often becomes the basis for the development of appropriate programs and policies, and resource allocation.
However, in a continent where gender data remains under collected and the analysis of available gender data is largely biased, women’s needs are not adequately planned for. Furthermore, the collection of basic data for marginalized groups such as LGBTQI+ people and migrants is often ignored, meaning women bearing these identities are further invisibilized.

Trojan-designed Bluetooth menorah helps keep holiday traditions alive

In each of the three years since she started her PhD in computer science at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, Lauren Klein has celebrated Hanukkah in Los Angeles with family friend Ryan Dubin, a first-year student at the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy, and his grandparents.
In this annual Jewish Festival of Lights, those who celebrate gather together to light the menorah candles in a specific order. But with COVID-19 still spreading throughout L.A., they didn’t want to take the risk of huddling together too closely. Yelling across the yard from 15 feet apart came with its own challenges, as masks would obscure their invitations to light each candle simultaneously. But the robotics student didn’t want to forgo the tradition, instead deciding to bring technology to bear on the occasion.
