Im Zehn-Kilometer-Rennen bestimmte der Doppel-Weltmeister vom Start an eindrucksvoll das Geschehen und schwamm zur ersten Olympia-Goldmedaille für den Deutschen Schwimm-Verband seit 13 Jahren.
«Für mich persönlich ist das, glaub ich, mein Sommermärchen heute», sagte Wellbrock. Im Zielbereich krabbelte er zunächst auf allen vieren aus dem Wasser und ließ sich in der großen Hitze kaltes Wasser und ein nasses Handtuch reichen. Dann spannte er stolz den starken Bizeps an - die Geste passte am Tag seines bombastischen Auftritts.
«Ich bin begeistert», sagte Bundestrainer Bernd Berkhahn. Der 50-Jährige räumte auch gut anderthalb Stunden nach dem Triumph seines Ausnahme-Athleten ein: «Das ist noch nicht wirklich angekommen. Dafür war jetzt zu viel Spannung die vergangenen Tage und Wochen. Aber das kommt schon noch.»

Im Freiwasserrennen über zehn Kilometer bestimmte der Doppel-Weltmeister mit dem Selbstverständnis eines Champions vom Start an das Geschehen und schwamm zur ersten Goldmedaille für den Deutschen Schwimm-Verband seit 13 Jahren. Im Ziel ließ sich der 23-Jährige nach einer Vorstellung der Extra-Klasse nur zu gerne von den Teammitgliedern umarmen. «Für mich persönlich ist das, glaub ich, mein Sommermärchen heute», sagte Wellbrock.

Marathon swimming is as much a test of mental endurance as it is physical conditioning over a 10-kilometre course. The outcome is often decided by weather and water conditions, as well as strategy and a furious sprint to the finish.
Varying conditions appeal to marathon swimmers because of the challenges they present. But the potential for dangerous air and water temperatures had some swimmers, coaches and federations urging Olympic organizers to move the races from Tokyo Bay to a cooler location.

The Brazilian claimed the women's 10-kilometer marathon swimming event on Wednesday in 1 hour, 59 minutes, 30.8 seconds.
Cunha finished nine-tenths of a second ahead of defending champion Sharon van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands. Van Rouwendaal took silver in 1:59.31.7.
Kareena Lee earned bronze in 1:59.32.5, giving Australia its first medal in marathon swimming. Lee got hit in the chest by one of the fish.
