Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards joined the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus for the inaugural Gov. P.B.S. (Pickney Benton Stewart) Pinchback Breakfast honoring retired Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Bernette Joshua Johnson. Former Acting Gov. Pinchback is Louisiana’s first African American governor, and this year marks the 100
th anniversary of his death. The celebration was held to honor his life and legacy and to present Chief Justice Johnson with the P.B.S. Legacy Award. Chief Justice Johnson is the first African American and second woman to serve in that position on the Louisiana Supreme Court.
“The recognition of Gov. Pinchback’s importance in history is long overdue, and it was an honor to be part of today’s event and to present Chief Justice Johnson with the very first P.B.S. Pinchback Legacy Award,” said Gov. Edwards. “Like him, she is a trailblazer who has had an exemplary legal career working more than 50 years as a lawyer, 3 ....

Funeral service to be held today for former Louisiana Governor Roemer


The first of two funeral services will be held today for former Louisiana Governor Gov. Buddy Roemer. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat recalls the political life of the former four-term congressman and a one-term governor.
“Buddy Roemer was an optimist, he was very bright, he was a character as far as politics was concerned. A lot of people loved him, and a lot of people disliked him because of his style,” said Pinsonat.
Roemer, a Bossier City native and Harvard graduate, first entered politics when he was elected as a delegate to the Louisiana Constitutional Convention in 1972. Pinsonat said Roemer’s father even worked for former Governor Edwin Edwards in his first administration then Roemer defeated Edwards in the 1987 Gubernatorial election. ....

Buddy Roemer, former US representative and Louisiana governor, dies at 77
Buddy Roemer, former U.S. representative and governor of Louisiana, died on Monday at the age of 77.
Roemer was ill for months and died at his home in Baton Rouge, according to The Advocate. Roemer, who was a Type 1 diabetic, suffered a stroke in 2014 that left him with a speech impediment and a halting gait.
Born in 1943, Roemer graduated as president and valedictorian of his high school class and attended Harvard University, where he graduated with his bachelor s degree in government and economics in 1964, according to the National Governor Association. ....
