Viola Davis, Jason Bateman & Other SAG Award Snubs & Surprises

Usually the SAG Awards are the first of the major peer groups to hand out statues in the new year, but 2021 is proving to be even more change-inducing than 2020.
The 27th Annual SAG Awards were pushed a couple of times, first due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and then when the Grammys decided to have their show on the same night SAG was planning to celebrate. This led to the WGA Awards kicking things off, with PGA following soon after.

But, the additional time did not seem to affect SAG ballot outcomes by much. Netflix’s “The Crown” picked up its second consecutive drama series ensemble, for example, while “Schitt’s Creek” wrapped up its run with the SAG after nabbing an Emmy and a Golden Globe for its final season. Additionally, Jason Sudeikis, Catherine O’Hara, Mark Ruffalo and Anya Taylor-Joy also followed their February Golden Globe wins for “Ted Lasso,” “Schitt’s Creek,” “I Know This Much Is True” and “The Queen’s Gambit,” respectively, with statues from SAG.

The SAG Awards Were a Streaming Success: Column

By now, more than a year deep into the social disruption wreaked by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had several examples of awards shows trying their best to accomplish something like the traditional experience for viewers at home.
What we hadn’t seen, exactly, was a show deciding to lean into the alienation and isolation of the past 13 months, and to put everything on remotely. After the Emmys and Golden Globes — both of which had substantial in-person elements and worked hard to convince us they were worth our time — the audience could be forgiven for being worn out. Viewers curious about what a truly socially-distanced awards show might look like were likely well-served by this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.

SAG Award Wins Solidify 'The Crown,' 'Ted Lasso,' 'The Queen's Gambit' as Emmy Frontrunners

SAG Award Wins Solidify 'The Crown,' 'Ted Lasso,' 'The Queen's Gambit' as Emmy Frontrunners

There’s a double-edged sword to being singled out as an awards frontrunner. Yes, it’s a positive sign when pundits consider you the top contender to score a top prize. But be identified as the top of the pack too early, and you’ve immediately been handed a target on your back as the one to beat.
So I suppose it’s a bit of an apology to Netflix’s “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit,” as well as Apple TV Plus’ “Ted Lasso,” but we’re going to have to use that “f” word — frontrunner — right now. The three programs have already been early favorites to lead this year’s Emmy Awards in drama, limited series and comedy, respectively. And Sunday night’s SAG Awards wins for all three shows just solidified it.

SAG Awards: Netflix Wins Big During Pandemic Year With 'The Crown,' 'Chicago 7' and 'Ma Rainey'

In a pandemic year where most viewers consumed movies and TV shows from their couches, Netflix had a big night Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday with “The Trial of the Chicago 7” winning best motion picture and “The Crown” being named best TV drama. Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek” continued its hot streak on its farewell tour, winning for best TV comedy.
It proved to be a history-making night. For the first time in the telecast’s 27 years, all four movie acting awards went to actors of color: Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman for lead actors (for “Ma Rainey’s Bottom”), Daniel Kaluuya for supporting actor (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) and Yuh-Jung Youn for supporting female actor (“Minari”).

Fox News Adds Greg Gutfeld's Late-Night Comedy to Conservative Mix

Fox News Adds Greg Gutfeld's Late-Night Comedy to Conservative Mix

Each weeknight, Fox News Channel’s primetime opinion hosts seek to own the libs. Greg Gutfeld says he wants to own some laughs.
In an unorthodox maneuver, executives at the Fox Corp.-owned cable-news outlet will explore whether jokes and satire can capture a crowd after 11 p.m. with “Gutfeld!,” which debuts Monday night. Fox is the latest in the media industry to try and blend news and comedy into a hybrid it hopes will sell.
More from Variety
“Human beings aren’t always 100% funny or 100% serious,” says Gutfeld in an interview, suggesting he has leeway to test concepts that Fox News viewers don’t usually see on weeknights (his show will replace Shannon Bream’s “Fox News @ Night,” which moves to midnight). He has been honing his craft on Saturday nights, where he has led “The Greg Gutfeld Show,” another program that aims for fans of late-night styles and that Fox News says generates a substantial audience. Among the sketches presented there: a spoof ad for “Demotrex,” which promised a cure for “Democrats who over-promise and under-deliver.”

Harvey Weinstein Appeals Conviction on Rape and Assault Charges

Harvey Weinstein Appeals Conviction on Rape and Assault Charges

Harvey Weinstein filed an appeal on Monday of his conviction on counts of sexual assault and rape, arguing that the judge made numerous errors that resulted in a rigged trial.
Weinstein’s attorney, Barry Kamins, argued that the judge should have excluded Juror 11, saying she could not have been impartial because she had written a novel that involved sexual exploitation by predatory older men. Kamins also argued that Justice James Burke improperly excluded testimony that could have been helpful to Weinstein.
More from Variety
He also challenged Burke’s decision to allow three women to testify about uncharged sexual assaults involving Weinstein. Such “prior bad acts” witnesses — or “Molineux witnesses” in New York — are also at the heart of comedian Bill Cosby’s appeal of his sexual assault conviction in Pennsylvania.

When director Shaka King was looking for an artist to deliver the end credit song for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” he went to Grammy winner H.E.R.
Of the qualities that made her the perfect artist to complete the task, he says, “versatility in musicianship, soul, artistic and personal integrity. She’s a throwback.”
More from Variety
King’s approach was to give the Oscar-nominated singer-songwriter notes about what he didn’t want. He says, “I really wanted to give her as much space creatively as possible – while expressing a desire to hear something contemporary with echoes of 1968. When I heard the Curtis Mayfield inspiration, I was like, ‘Yes!’”
