Let’s talk about hair.
Cue the soundtrack to the Broadway musical “Hair” theme song: “Gimme a head with hair/Long, beautiful hay-ahh …!”
Stop the music. I mean real hair!
And respectability. Let’s talk about that too.
The “politics of respectability” have taken a real beating lately, even from people who have benefited from practicing it.
All of these themes came to mind in a bill proposed by freshman state Sen. Mike Simmons a North Side Democrat appointed to the seat earlier this year who, like my own millennial son, has a robust headful of dreadlocks. ....

Senator champions bill to ban hair discrimination in schools

State Sen. Mike Simmons knows what it’s like to be “humiliated” in front of other kids because of a lack of understanding or acceptance of his hairstyle.
The North Side Democrat made history as the first Black person to represent his North Side area in the state Senate. Decades earlier, his family was one of the first Black families to move into the Lincoln Square neighborhood.
Now the rookie state senator has introduced a bill to address “hair discrimination,” racism related to a person’s hair.
“I understand what this feels like personally, to be made to be humiliated in front of your classmates. To have authority figures belittle you and humiliate you in front of other people because of something that is God-given is entirely unacceptable,” Simmons said. ....

State Rep. Kelly Cassidy and two others interested in the appointment to outgoing state Sen. Heather Steans’ legislative seat laid out their resumes and fielded questions from constituents Tuesday evening at a virtual meeting hosted by a group that has raised concerns that the selection process shuts out voters.
Mike Simmons, a lifelong resident of the district, and Cassidy explained their qualifications for the state’s upper legislative chamber during the Zoom meeting hosted by a local chapter of Indivisible. ....

Joining Harris on the leadership team are such well-known House members as Reps. Jehan Gordon-Booth of Peoria, Robyn Gabel of Evanston and Jay Hoffman from the Metro East area downstate.
“I’m very pleased by the team,” Welch told me in an interview last night. “It’s a very diverse group of people,” with balance among race, gender and geography.
But notably not on the team is another North Sider, Ann Williams, who comes from the district immediately to the west of Harris’ and who drew more votes in the competition to succeed Madigan than anyone save Welch. ....
