Napa Valley 10 Questions: Whitney Macdonald: 'Be our (Napa Valley) guest'

Working in the food and wine industry runs in her family, said Whitney Macdonald, senior manager, partnerships and guest experience at Visit Napa Valley.
“I’ve worked in restaurants since I was 15. In college, I started working in top-notch establishments in New York City and those experiences helped guide my interest in the world of wine,” she said.
Macdonald also worked a few harvest internships, which eventually led to a career in winery hospitality in both Sonoma and Napa.
“From there it was a natural transition to Visit Napa Valley. Now, instead of telling one winery’s story, I get to talk about all of the amazing tourism businesses here in the valley!”

HVS Market Pulse: Napa Valley | By Bomie Kim & Noella Moon – Hospitality Net

Noella Moon
Replete with world-renowned vineyards, wineries, and culinary experiences, Napa Valley has a stellar reputation as a top destination market both domestically and abroad. However, numerous wildfires and the COVID-19 pandemic have affected the market. While the long-term effects of the wildfires have yet to be determined, the local economy remained relatively strong, and the impact on regional visitation from the San Francisco Bay Area and on hotel performance as a whole was relatively minimal, at least until the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

STR data for year-end 2017 showed an occupancy increase of 6.8% and a total hotel revenue increase of 9.2% from the previous year. Furthermore, from 2016 through 2018, visitor spending in Napa Valley increased by 15.9%, and visitor growth increased at a rate of 8.9%, suggesting that the area quickly recovered from the minimal impact of the wildfires that occurred during that time.

Napa County hotels suffer 'worst year' due to COVID-19 pandemic

“It’s just to thank them for coming to see us,” said Zertuche.
The thank you comes at a time when the Napa Valley lodging industry is still reeling from the impacts of COVID-19.
According to hotel research firm, STR, 2020 was “the worst year on record” for U.S. hotels.
Lodging properties across the country, including Napa County, saw devastating drops from occupancy to room rates and revenue.
Occupancy at Napa County hotels shrank to just 41%, a 42.6% drop compared to 2019. The average daily room rate also fell, to $266.61 a night. That’s a 20.9% decline. Revenue sank 58.7%, to $184 million.
In 2019 hotel revenue topped $446 million, said STR.

Making a gutsy move: Napa Valley local opens Habituate at First Street Napa

Admittedly, COVID has had some negative impacts.
“This was supposed to be the first year that all three of my kids would be in school, and I planned on being able to spend a lot of time in the store. Instead, like lots of moms, I became a teacher.”
Shackford said she was fortunate enough to hire a strong staff, with even family friends coming to the rescue, so she’s been able to focus on homeschooling as well as her business.
Shackford dreamed of getting into retail while still a kid. In her early twenties, she sent herself a “goal” email, stating her intention to get into the business.

10 Questions: Napa stylist's goal? Make clients look and feel great

If it wasn’t for spending one work shift in a very cold walk-in fridge, Brooklyn Santiago might never have found her career as a hairstylist.
More than 20 years ago, Santiago applied for a salon reception job, but didn’t get a response before accepting a winery job Upvalley.
“Having spent my first day packaging foie gras in a walk-in fridge that I did not dress for was confirmation that this would not be my path,” Santiago wrote.
“After my shift I headed straight to the salon worried that I may have missed my chance. A week after accepting my salon job, I realized that not only was this my path, it was my calling.”

No. 5 Story of 2020: A challenging year, to say the least, for Napa Valley's wine industry

To say now is an unprecedented time for Napa Valley’s wine industry is to repeat what is perhaps the year’s most ubiquitous understatement.
News broke in early 2020 that wine consumption had declined slightly in the United States in 2019, the first dip of its kind in a quarter-century. It came as something of a blow even to Napa Valley’s wine industry, whose premium reputation typically insulates it from general market volatility. But the previous years’ harvest, in 2018, had produced a wine grape crop more than a third larger than expected across the North Bay.
Of both oversupply and a slight drop in demand, a grape glut was born, depressing market prices for both bulk wine and grapes across California, according to Glenn Proctor, partner at Ciatti Company, a bulk wine and grape brokerage firm. The state’s crush report, released early this year, listed the average price for a ton of Napa Valley grapes as close to $5,800 — a level not reflective of true market conditions, he said.

Wildfires threaten the bread and butter of Napa Valley: tourism and wine production. What now?

The Glass Fire — one of two wildfires to have ravaged Napa County this year — may have cost Napa Valley’s wine industry as much as $1 billion in losses. And there may be yet a higher price to pay — perhaps an incalculable one — if the region cannot stanch yet another destructive fire season this coming year, experts say.
Though isolated wildfires are of course damaging, stakeholders fear the real hit to the region’s reputation among prospective visitors will come from repetitive fire seasons. Fire season over the last half decade in Napa Valley has been a fraught time of year; serious wildfires have forced evacuations and destroyed homes and businesses three of the last six years.
