SHARING OPTIONS: It is important to get some fertiliser incorporated into the seedbed ahead of planting. \ Donal O'Leary A variable week: Weather dominated what you could do on land over the past week as ground conditions continue to be variable because of either recent rain or heavier ground. Some growers are finished planting, others have some land that has remained too damp to work, while others got rained off yet again. Rainfall over the week varied from 2.6mm in south Wexford to 53.4mm in east Galway and the month to date varies from either side of 30mm across much of the east coast to 80mm in Mullingar, with even higher amounts further west.
Hopefully we will see drills back out on fields again shortly. No spring yet: The past week put a halt to field work with between 1in and 2in of rain across the main tillage areas. Soil temperatures have begun to creep back up and are now generally between 8°C and 9°C across most of the country. This will help the crops that were sown in recent weeks and help to drive growth in winter cereals. Beans: Demand for bean seed is reported to be slow in parts of the country. There is still time to get this crop sown but it would be best done in the next week or two. If we do not keep good rotations going, our cereal yields will slip even further.
Agriculture Wednesday, 17 March 2021 14:30 (Togo First) - The government of Togo will organize general assemblies in the husbandry sector. These assemblies will gather all actors engaged in the sector to reflect on reforms likely to boost the country’s output, and especially tackle the 45% deficit in meat products at the national level. Indeed, the country records a shortfall in this area despite production in sub-sectors like poultry and small ruminants having improved with the PASA. The latter also helped increase its beneficiaries’ income by 50%. “ Despite the special attention the State pays to husbandry, there is still much to be done,” said Antoine Lekpa, Minister of agriculture, livestock, and rural development, last week at the launch of regional workshops dedicated to livestock promotion.
Community Spotlight: Madison County can help during kitten season Katherine Conder Contributing Columnist FacebookTwitterEmail Spring is a wonderful time of year, with warmer weather, trees blooming, grass turning green, shorts and sandals and sadly lots and lots of unwanted kittens and cats in animal controls and shelters. In most places across America, animals mate and give birth in spring. Unlike other animals, cats can keep on reproducing, having litter after litter right up until the weather is cold again. On average, a cat can have anywhere from four to eight kittens during pregnancy. Since a cat can be pregnant several times a year, the cat population gets bigger and bigger every year. This is why it is so important to spay and neuter your cat.
Jericho, a dog, needs a Hail Mary: Foster needed Pam Rybarczyk FacebookTwitterEmail Jericho, a dog, needs a Hail Mary, and a foster. He is available to meet by calling the ROAR Donofrio Family Animal Shelter, 45 South St. in Ridgefield, at 203-438-0158, for an appointment.ROAR Donofrio Family Animal Shelter / Contributed photo Coming from the ROAR Shelter, this is a very unusual ask, but we are in desperate need for this poor boy. ROAR is seeking a hospice/foster, or “fospice” for their 8-year-old Bulldog mix Jericho, where there are no other pets in the home. Jericho has multiple Grade 2 mast cell tumors on his body. Our veterinarians are not sure how long he has left for a good quality of life. Because of this, we want to get Jericho out of the shelter, and place him in a home, surrounded by love, and people. Jericho has a few quirks, and old habits that are hard for him to overcome. While Jericho enjoys being around other dogs, he guards his food, and must be an only pet.

Beaten, Abandoned Pit Bull Spends 10 Years in a Shelter, Until Loving Staff Member Adopts Her Rescuers first found the female pit bull with her muzzle bound, beaten, with her legs “hog-tied.” Since then, she spent almost a decade in an animal shelter, though recently, the unfortunate animal’s lot has improved, as she has found the perfect forever home. A good Samaritan named Ernie Moss found the pit bull, now named Tatiana, “nearly frozen to the ground” in January 2011 while out walking his dogs in Michigan. “[T]he larger of the Moss’s two boxers started pulling Ernie toward a wooded ditch,” Capital Area Humane Society (CAHS) explained in a Feb. 18 Facebook post. “Upon following the dog’s lead, Ernie noticed a slight shaking motion underneath a blanket, beneath a fallen tree.”
