State, local officials partner to address hate crimes in New Hampshire
As hate crimes rise across the country, officials in New Hampshire say they believe the crimes are underreported in the Granite State.
Recent data from the FBI shows that in 2019, hate crime cases were the highest they have been in a decade, with about 20 hate crimes reported each day. Sign up for our Newsletters
New Hampshire s numbers are lower, but they re still happening. There were 16 hate crimes reported to the FBI in 2019: eight involved race, ethnicity or ancestry; five involved religion and three involved sexual orientation.
But those numbers could be higher. Law enforcement officials said hate crimes are vastly underreported. ....

Laurie List Legislation Passes New Hampshire State Senate


CONCORD, NH The state Senate voted unanimously Thursday in favor of proposed legislation that would make public police disciplinary hearings before the Police Standards and Training Council and make public the confidential Laurie List of dishonest police.
State Sen. Sharon Carson, R-Londonderry, introduced House Bill 471 and its recent amendment, congratulating everyone who worked on what she called a compromise to the controversial Laurie List issue.

There was no mention that the amendment stems from confidential negotiations between ACLU-NH, Solicitor General Daniel Will and five of the news outlets involved in a public records lawsuit against the state seeking to make public the names of the 280 plus officers on the list. Only one news outlet, lead petitioner the New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism, opposed the compromise. ....

In its infinite wisdom, the Norwich Selectboard has decided for the time being against equipping the town’s police officers with body cameras.
Talk about a lack of vision.
Body cameras are an important tool in the national drive to make law enforcement more accountable and transparent.
Communities and states that fail to equip their police officers with body cameras are “really not being responsible,” said George Ostler, a criminal defense lawyer for nearly 40 years whose office is in Norwich. ....
