The Old Paths: Ride the love train | The Stokes News

By Leslie Bray Brewer
In the ’60s, the Beatles told us that “All You Need is Love.” A decade later, England Dan and John Ford Coley harmonized that “Love is the Answer.” I couldn’t tell you what folks were singing in the late ’80s or ’90s because I was too busy raising young’uns to sing anything but “Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?”
But I reckon somebody was surely keeping that love theme going. We surely need it now, don’t we?
One of my favorite Gospel music artists, Kirk Franklin, won the 2020 Grammy for Best Gospel Performance/Song with a tune I play regularly to lift my spirits, “Love Theory.” Strangely enough, I alternate that one with a little something from the O’Jays back in 1972: “Love Train.” I dream of an existence where “people all over the world join hands” to “start a love train.”

Stokes is Super | The Stokes News

By Neill Caldwell neill.caldwell@thestokesnews.com
If you were watching Sunday’s Super Bowl on the local CBS affiliate and stuck it out to the end of the game, you might have been surprised to see a commercial about Stokes County.
“Stokes County State of Mind” was not a nationwide, multi-million dollar ad buy, but a regional commercial purchased with WFMY-TV that was mostly paid for with grant funding. It was the work of County Tourism Director Tory Mabe and a host of others.
Back in the fall, Mabe began applying for grants wuth the North Carolina Department of Travel and Tourism, and was able to secure more than $20,000 through COVID Cares funding.

Board inches closer to salary schedule | The Stokes News

The new Board of Commissioners convenes its organizational meeting earlier in the month.
DANBURY — The Board of County Commissioners moved closer to approval of a new salary system for county employees during its regular meeting Monday night, signaling it will approve the salary study plan being offered by The Mercer Group, an outside consultant, at its next meeting in January.
Actually implementing the plan, however, may require much more work, several commented.
In short, the plan would assign each county job a pay grade, which would have a minimum salary, a maximum and a mid-point. The Mercer Group’s plan also offers recommendations as to which jobs should be assigned into which pay grade.

He wrote a song about Christmas in rest homes. He didn't know it would become a song about his mom. | Local News

"
Another Christmas Eve, as I look out my bedroom window, and wonder where the kids could be, it seems so long ago," he sings in the opening verse of the melancholic, three-hanky folk song.
This song has special resonance for McGee this year. For the first time in his life, he won't get to see his mother, Martha, on Christmas. She became a resident at Priddy Manor in King a few weeks before the spread of COVID-19 forced assisted living homes to restrict visitors.
"Typically, we'd have a big family gathering," said McGee, who is the executive director of the Stokes County Arts Council. "We'd be there Christmas morning. This is different, and I'm definitely relating to this now. I didn't know it at the time, but she's the someone I was singing about when I wrote this. Years later, she's the subject of my song."

The county has added 217 new cases in the past week, or an average of 31 a day.
In the latest update of the state county alert system, released Tuesday afternoon, Stokes has gone from yellow to orange, or showing a “substantial spread” of COVID, the middle of the three classifications. And Stokes is completely surrounded by red, or “critical,” counties.

Henderson County News: Born with 'a sheep dog attitude,' Hendrix served in life and death

That day, Dec. 8, was Heidi’s mom’s birthday. Ryan Patrick Hendrix was born at 12:24 a.m. on Dec. 9.
“My parents said he was born 25 minutes late,” Heidi said. “But he was never a boy that was late. He was ahead of time.”
At 9 pounds, 4 ounces, and 21 inches long, Ryan was the biggest baby Heidi and her husband, Don, would have. He was in the middle. Ryan had three older brothers, three younger brothers and a little sister.
“The nurse said when she held him when he was first born that he tried to jump out of her arms,” Heidi recalled. Don added: “He was born with a six-pack. At seven months old, he could climb the chair and get onto the (kitchen) table.”
