Why is the COVID-19 vaccine so slow to rollout in Florida?

Why is the COVID-19 vaccine so slow to rollout in Florida? | Letters
Here’s what readers are saying in daily letters to the editor.

Administration of the two currently approved COVID-19 vaccines has now declined from warp speed to snail’s pace. The original target of 100 million vaccinations by the end of the year has successively dropped first to 40 million then to 20 million, but with little prospect that even half that number will be achieved. While doses produced by Pfizer and Moderna have, with some glitches, been sent out to the states in timely fashion and goodly numbers, the states and localities receiving them have been hampered in actually administering the vaccines by inadequate human and financial resources as well as organizational capabilities, especially in rural areas.

TAMPA — A Hillsborough County commissioner says an ongoing public policy debate calls to mind an old adage poking fun at individual gullibility.
“I’ve got some swamp land in Florida to sell you,” says Commissioner Mariella Smith. “You know, because swamp land is supposed to be undevelopable.”

Florida nonprofit helps veterans into the agriculture industry

By ILEANA NAJARRO | Tampa Bay Times | Published: December 23, 2020
TAMPA, Fla. (Tribune News Service) — Sara Ferrera needed something new. Back in the Army, she worked as an analyst in an office. After leaving active duty, and later the Reserves, she then quit her civilian job to pursue a college degree.
When that didn’t pan out, she stumbled across the Veterans Florida Agriculture Program.
A pilot program that began in 2018 through the nonprofit Veterans Florida, the six-month paid fellowship offers veterans with no prior knowledge hands-on experience in agriculture. Veterans Florida partners with the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences on the program. After the fellowship, it helps participants find jobs in the agriculture industry, said Joe Marino, executive director of the nonprofit.

TAMPA — A new message might seem out of place amid the excitement of consumer spending and a regional economic boost from the upcoming Super Bowl at Raymond James Stadium — “Don’t buy it, Tampa Bay.”
The words will be on billboards, social media and print advertisements. The message will be wrapped around vehicles used by Uber, Lyft and food delivery services and on buses from the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority and the agency’s bus shelters. Broadcast commercials with the same theme will feature the WWE’s Titus O’Neil.
