The sign reads “Joe’s Diner,” and although it originally referred to the elder Joe when the restaurant opened in 2001, the father has dedicated the North Naples institution to the memory of his son, also Joe, who died in March of a blood infection days shy of his 54th birthday. “We’re not going to change a thing,” said DiBernardo, aka “Big Joe.” “If anything, we’ll work hard to keep his name. My family has really rallied. We’re still in shock.” The younger Joe, a “distinguished graduate” of the New England Culinary Institute, moved from Oregon and a gig with Blue Cross Blue Shield corporate restaurants to Naples in 1998. Wyoming Valley Luzerne County Child Advocacy Center is selling bouquets of pinwheels to raise funds and awareness to prevent child abuse in the region during April, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Bouquets of 10 pinwheels are $25 and can be purchased by emailing Shannon.peduto@luzernecountycac.org, call 570-208-2895 or purchase via the CAC website. Pinwheel bouquets are available for pickup now through April 30. Area residents are encouraged to purchase pinwheel bouquets and plant a pinwheel garden on their property to demonstrate their support for efforts to prevent child abuse in the area. A pig roast, pitch tournament and pavement brick sale are planned to raise funds for playground improvements at Forty Fort Park. Organizers are raising funds for a handicapped swing set and playground equipment for children under 5 at the Forty Fort Park. The pig roast will be held June 19 at the Forty Fort Pavilion, hosted by the White House Diner and Fort Cafe, with all proceeds going toward the handicapped swing set and playground equipment for children under 5 at the Forty Fort Park. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased at the White House Diner and Fort Cafe. Chef Jeff Pizza will oversee the preparations.
