Amid shortage of face masks, researchers explore 3D options to guard against COVID-19, other infectious diseases
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a high demand for respiratory protection among health care workers in hospitals, especially surgical N95 face masks – cup-shaped respirators that guard against airborne particles and liquid contaminants.
In response, VA researchers are experimenting with 3D-printed masks as a substitute for N95s and other respiratory devices.
A newly published study evaluated how well the 3D masks perform, with a focus on the filter materials used to block out airborne particles and liquid contaminants. The project team found a wide range of filter efficiency in the 3D masks, including some filters that met or closely approached the criteria needed to make a typical N95. Others did not filter nearly as well when matched up against the N95. ....

Five years ago, Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua Burch became the first paralyzed service member to walk to his own promotion ceremony, wearing an exoskeleton that helped him walk and stand to receive his corporal chevrons.
Now medically retired, Burch, 26, hopes again to be a trailblazer the first Department of Veterans Affairs patient to regain function in his lower body to include taking steps courtesy of an electrical implant in his spine that is designed to stimulate his body s sensorimotor networks. ....

One of the oldest homes in Northside is no more.
The 1800s-era Westwood house, also known as McGuire Cottage, was demolished this week at the behest of Union Presbyterian Seminary.
It owns the so-called Westwood Tract where the structure had stood for two centuries dwarfed in recent years by the newly built Canopy at Ginter Park apartments.
Seminary spokesman Mike Frontiero said its board of trustees voted last year to demolish the structure, originally the home of Confederate surgeon Hunter Holmes McGuire, “as recognition of and in repentance for the resourcing provided to the seminary through the labor of enslaved persons.” ....

VA says it has no plans to rename hospital that honors Confederate physician

WASHINGTON The Department of Veterans Affairs does not plan to change the name of one of its hospitals that honors a Confederate physician who suggested castrating Black men accused of sexual crimes.
Christina Noel, a VA spokeswoman, said the agency is not considering a name change for the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Va., which honors the personal doctor to Stonewall Jackson, one of the most famous Confederate generals of the Civil War.
The call to remove statues of Confederates leaders or renaming buildings that honor them gained momentum during the summer amid nationwide protests against police brutality following the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. That movement spurred Congress to pass a measure renaming military bases that honor Confederates. ....
