Last week, Zaila Avant-garde became the first African American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Now, schools are lining up to offer the young academic star full ride scholarships.
On Friday, Avant-garde caught the attention of Southern University and A&M College. The institution is is the largest HBCU in Louisiana. Dr. Ray Belton, president the Southern University System, shared his congratulatory remarks on twitter and offered her a tour of the campuses across the state.

Thursday night, the Harvey 14-year-old won the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Avant-garde correctly spelled the word “murraya for the win. Murraya is a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian tree.
She said winning the competition is a dream come true.
“I’ve been working towards that goal for like two years,” Avant-garde said. “To finally have it, it’s like the best possible outcome.” ....

What was the winning word at the Scripps National Spelling Bee?

Murraya is a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian trees having pinnate leaves and flowers with imbricated petals, according to Spelling Bee officials.
The winning word came after the runner up, Chaitra Thummala, 12, from San Francisco, misspelled the compound word neroli oil.
After correctly spelling Murraya, Avant-garde took home $50,000, the Scripps Cup and a slate of other prizes.
A historic spelling bee returns
In 2020, the spelling bee was canceled for the first time since 1945 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Zaila Avant-garde won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday night, making her the first African American champion of the contest.
Avant-garde, a 14-year-old from Harvey, La., won the Scripps Cup in the 18th round after she correctly spelled the word murraya. She is the first African American contestant to win in the competition s 96-year history, according to The Associated Press.
After she spelled murraya correctly, Avant-garde jumped around the stage, and confetti was blasted.

Zaila (zah-EE-luh) Avant-garde earned the prestigious title in round 18, when she correctly spelled Murraya which is defined as a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian trees having pinnate leaves and flowers with imbricated petals.
