In the audience was Naima Kradjian, CEO of Goodwill Theater Inc. and longtime supporter of the arts in the Southern Tier.
I wanted to experience what it felt like to be socially distanced from the art and from each other, recalled Kradjian.  Will I still feel like I m in an audience? What will it be like?
Kradjian recalls feeling shocked at the back and forth energy between the performers and patrons, even with a socially distant audience, in the 100-seat tent in a parking lot next door to the Berkshire Theatre Group’s 780-seat Colonial Theatre.
The first time the actors came on and started to sing, I was not alone in crying, said Kradjian.  Almost everybody in the audience had that reaction of oh my gosh, we can feel this again. ....

NY theaters reopening: Why many Southern Tier venues remain closed

Joan Sprague is a people person.
She has been volunteering since the opening of Johnson City s Schorr Family Firehouse Stage in 2007, working behind the concession stand. Up until last March, when the theater was shut down, you could spot her donning her red Firehouse Stage apron for every show and routinely laughing with patrons before and after the performance.
She says she thinks of the people and the staff at the theater as family, one that she has been without for some time.
That s the beauty of volunteering, you re feeling like you re helping, but you re getting so much more than just helping the theater, Sprague said. I really just think people are ready for it to open back up. ....

Kradjian, who has been working tirelessly for several decades to promote performing arts in the region and restore the historic Goodwill Theatre, relays the heartbreaking decision to lay off some staff as the pandemic canceled a whole slate of performances ranging from Cabaret shows to comedy acts.
While performances have been continuing online, the theaters still face the challenge of being able to provide entertainment and educational programs while being able to pay the bills. ....
