MAY 27  ― Last month, the Better Malaysia Foundation (BMF), corporate social responsibility unit of the Berjaya Corp Group, published an ideation of affordable homes for low-income Malaysians that was later met by disapprovals of many netizens. Meant for B40 homes, these units range from 450 sqft to 900 sqft in size and will cost between RM120,000 to RM300,000. Strangely enough, the idea of carving a 900 square feet apartment flat into 5 rooms, which invites comparison to the claustrophobia-inducing “cage homes” in Hong Kong first photographed by Benny Lam in 2017, was only the second-most outrageous bit of the proposal. ....

Ever seen images of preschoolers staring longingly at a single marshmallow? Chances are, you caught a glimpse of the so-called marshmallow test. Conducted about 50 years ago, the experiment was designed to examine preschoolers ability to delay gratification when presented with a choice of having one marshmallow now or waiting a period of time and having two marshmallows later.
The marshmallow test was more than just amusing video footage. Researchers later suggested that passing it could be an early indicator of a child s future success in school, occupation and even life in general. Those findings have come under scrutiny in recent years, but the study remains one of the most beloved pieces of social-science research. ....

A child would be presented with a marshmallow and the option to eat the treat immediately or wait fifteen minutes to earn two marshmallows; the ability to practice self-restraint in order to earn a greater reward is considered a sign of higher cognitive function. While corvids, primates, and cuttlefish have all passed modified versions of the marshmallow test, a new study has ruled out potential skepticism and made it incredibly clear that these strange animals are highly capable of comprehending the ....
