After over a year, Colorado prisons will allow in-person visits again — with lots of precautions

It’s been over a year since thousands of incarcerated people in Colorado have seen their loved ones face to face.
All state prisons halted in-person visitation in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which tore it’s way through correctional facilities across the state. The Colorado Department of Corrections announced on Wednesday that it will begin allowing in person visits at all but two of the state’s prisons — with lots of rules and regulations in place.  ....

Ranchers throughout the West and around the nation are keeping a close eye on a proposed Colorado animal-cruelty initiative that cleared a key procedural hurdle April 7 but faces an uphill battle.
Animal-welfare advocates are trying to place the Protect Animals from Unnecessary Suffering and Exploitation (PAUSE) initiative on the ballot in November 2022. Critics say the measure would ban artificial insemination and other commonly accepted veterinary and animal care practices in Colorado and would ban the slaughter of livestock that have not yet lived more than one-quarter of their anticipated lifetime, which for cattle is about five years. ....

At the table or on the menu: Donovan hears frustration from ag producers


Kerry Donovan-D, Edwards, Colo., who is the chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Energy, has been leaning into the state’s agriculture community prior to the start of the legislative session.
Donovan met with a small group in Yuma, Colo., in the machine shed at former agriculture commissioner Don Brown’s farm last week. Donovan said Brown’s operation, like most agriculture operations, uses precision, technology, research, and science to adjust soil amendments to the inch, capitalize upon genetic potential in livestock, and increase efficiency through the use of GPS and even drones. This, she said, is a far cry from the stereotypical image of a farmer in the mind’s eye of some consumers. While none of this may surprise those involved in agriculture, she said now is an excellent time to remind consumers that agriculture is important to everyone across the state and not partisan. ....
