In an effort to prevent more car crashes, the de Blasio Administration will reduce the speed limit along 45 miles of streets at 11 locations in the four outer boroughs. Officials identified the roadways for having some of the highest rates of crashes in the city.
The new speed limits will go into effect in the coming weeks, and the NYPD will allow a 60-day grace period before ticketing will begin.
“Telling drivers to slow down – and working closely with the NYPD to hold dangerous drivers accountable – will save lives and make our city safer,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.

NEW YORK, NY - MARCH 20: A woman wearing a mask walks the Brooklyn Bridge in the midst of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak on March 20, 2020 in New York City. The economic situation in the city continued to decline as New York Gov Andrew Cuomo ordered all nonessential businesses to keep all their workers at home and New York weighed a shelter in place order for the entire city.
New York is stepping up its vaccination program with COVID-19 vaccine pop-up sites soon available in New York City s subway stations, transit hubs, and surrounding suburbs. This effort is to expand access to COVID-19 vaccines, as announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday. As an incentive, New York will offer a free seven-day MetroCard or Metro-North ticket or round trip LIRR to any individual who decides to be administered the vaccine during their daily commute.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A new speed limit is coming to Hylan Boulevard, prompting safe streets advocates to rejoice, as elected officials and angry motorists fume over what they believe to be the latest chapter in the city’s war on cars.
The decision to implement a 30-mile-per-hour speed limit along the entire span of Staten Island’s longest street has unsurprisingly been met with mixed reaction within the community.
