In the 19th century, African American literature was driven by narratives of slavery, many told from the perspective of escaped slaves such as Harriet Jacobs or Frederick Douglass. In the 1920s, as Black artists and intellectuals emerged following the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance produced a generation of authors who addressed issues of racism and segregation. By the middle of the century, Black authors played an important role in ....

NYC to Test No-Police Mental Health Crisis Response in Harlem

The experiment “will be a critical step forward in the city’s commitment to treat mental health crises as public health problems, not public safety issues,” Herman told a City Council committee. She said the city hopes to make the program citywide as quickly as possible, a hope she shares with Mayor Bill de Blasio, who called the new policy the way of the future and plans to build it out into 2022.
If you have a call, a family in distress, someone with a mental health challenge, there s no history of violence, there s no weapon present that s a call that should be handled by civilians, folks with the right training, mental health abilities, go in there and help that family, de Blasio said in an interview Monday night. So much we re talking about homelessness, incarceration, dropout rates so many things came back to mental health challenges. So, we re making a fundamental investment here to say let s change how we approach it, and then the NYPD can take that ti ....

NEW YORK - The produce shelves of the Whole Foods Market in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, looked like the aftermath of a robbery. It was 9 p.m. on the night before the third New York City snowstorm in three weeks, and panic shopping for what would be half a day of mild snowfall was in full effect. Elsewhere in the country - and earlier in the supply chain - a polar vortex was walloping Texas and Louisiana with ice storms and catastrophic power outages. Gone were the kiwis, the organic red mangoes. A lone bunch of bananas hung forlornly from a wall. Turnips? Rooted out. The broccoli tray? Headless. The lettuce aisle? Nothing romaining. ....
