Among the more than 2,000 youngsters treated for the coronavirus at Children s National Hospital in the District of Columbia, one newborn was unusual. The baby was very sick, for one. Most infected kids barely show symptoms and even the hospitalized ones tend to have mild cases.
But the real surprise came when doctors measured the infant s viral load. It was 51,418 times the median of other pediatric patients. And when they sequenced the virus in the baby recently, they found a variant they hadn t seen before. ....

RANCHI: Chief minister Hemant Soren on Saturday night shared the pain of tribals, who he said are discriminated against in the country, during the online India Conference of Harvard University. He also differentiated the religion the tribals follow from Hinduism and said a separate code in the upcoming Census is the need of the hour. Soren became the first tribal leader from the country to participate in the conference which is into its 18th edition this year.
Soren was interacting with a senior fellow from Harvard Kennedy School, Dr Suraj Yengde, who threw a volley of questions related to tribal identity, Centre-state relations and the model of development among other issues. ....

More than one million migrants will try to push through the southern border this year, warns a former senior official in former President Barack Obama’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The 78,000 arrivals in January were “nearly double the figure for the same month last year and the highest for January in a decade,” Juliette Kayyem wrote in a January 18 article for the Atlantic. “If the current pattern holds, the U.S. is on track for more than 1 million encounters in 2021.”
One million migrants adds up to roughly one migrant for every four Americans who turn 18 this year. ....

RANCHI: Chief minister Hemant Soren on Saturday night participated in an online discussion with Harvard Kennedy School’s senior fellow Suraj Yengde at the 18th edition of the India Conference organised by students of Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business school. During the close-to-one-hour discussion, Soren answered questions about tribal identity and Centre-state relations.
Soren said the tribals are being oppressed even after 72 years of Independence. “They are used as napkins. If the tribals are educated, who will be there to serve as drivers and cooks of the corporate?” he lamented. Soren also said the country is being radicalised and just for being a tribal, he and his party has suffered at the hands of the right-wing BJP and its allies. ....
