potential survivors. after a powerful earthquake shaped indonesia, at least $260.00 people are dead and the toll looked likely to increase. as more bodies are recovered from the worst air. and that the world cup and katara, australia taken early to shop france, but the world champions showed their class by fighting back to get their title defense off to a flyer. ah, i'm pablo foliage. welcome to the program. former u. s. president donald trump has lost a 3 year fight to prevent the release of his tax returns. trump had asked the supreme court to block lower court ruling, allowing a congressional committee to access 6 years of his tax records. but the justices denied his plea. paving the way for the treasury department to hand over the documents to the democratic lead panel. the w reporter katie stevens has been following story and joins me now here in the studio. ok to great to see. so this is a, let's say, complicated, long running legal battle. break it down force, right? well, to understand this, we really need to go all way back to 2016 during the presidential campaign back then donald trump became the 1st presidential candidate in 40 years to refuse to release his tax returns, which is kind of been standard practice for modern presidents and presidential candidates, now there was a lot of pressure on him to do so. he had boasted of his aggressive tax avoidance strategy in his business dealings. but he never did it. he refused to do it fast. forward to 2019 and the congressional committee that looked into tax matters said it needed to have a look at donald trump's tax returns for 2013 to 2018 because it wanted to reveal review how tax law applies to president's particular president. donald trump, with very compact business dealings. now the treasury at that time refused, and donald trump's lawyer said, no, there's no legal legislative purpose for any of this is all politically motivated. so that basically sets up this sort of legal fight that then went on for the next 3 years, ping ponging through various courts. and today we've had the supreme court now refusing to block the release of these tax returns to congress. so it finally now looks like it's probably the end of the road for the former u. s. president, in this case. right. so tell us the katie, what are the ramifications of this decision? all things are likely to move pretty quickly in out. so it seems that these tax returns and those of some businesses connected to donald trump, will be almost immediately turned over to this committee. however, the committee doesn't have a lot of time or either the democrats in the committee don't have much time left of congressional business this year, just weeks next year. the republicans take over control of the house of representatives and also the chair ship of this committee. so it's not really clear what the democrats will be able to do with this time, but you can bet they're going to be combing through all of these tax returns looking for any evidence of potential or improper accounting. and of course, that information could then potentially be linked to the public. that's arguably why the democrats have been so hell bent on, getting their hands on these tax returns before the end of the year. and also why donald trump and his team say that this is politically motivated. what will tell us, what does this actually or mean, or what could it mean am for donald trump? well, of course, there's all kinds of days after him that he wants to run for president again in 2024. this is a major blow. he's been fighting for years to keep these tax returns out of the public eye. but it's not, there's only a legal issue that he's facing. he's got many investigations on multiple fronts, from his role in inciting their capital riot, to holding classified documents and ledger fortunate business practices. and interestingly, this is the 3rd time that he's face to feet by the supreme court regarding legal battles or the documents just this year alone. so all of this is not looking very good. and of course, if any evidence does come out of wrong doing in his business dealings, something that he's boasted about being so successful at for years. that could really put both his off could really affect his campaign. he's already had a shaky start with the mid terms, the candidates that he back not performing as well as expected. but that doesn't mean we can, right, donald trump off just yet. he's likely to frame all these allegations once again as a political, which of course, and that could play well with his base. and we won't, joe, we'll be hearing plenty from donald trump. i'm pretty sure that dw reporter cody stevens. thanks. let's take a look at some other stories making news around the world. a rocket attack has killed 5 civilians and wounded 3 others in the northwestern syrian city of as, as a local nurse says, a young child was among those killed. the city is held by turkey official said the magnitude $5.00 event killed at least $265.00 people. but that number is still expected to rise. it struck the main island of java, south of the capitol jakarta, dozens of aftershocks have caused many poorly built homes and buildings to collapse . excavators. slowly scoop away the mud from the landslide, triggered by monday's earthquake off to shock some poor weather, a hampering the recovery operation. on the indonesian island of java that was only about the difficulty is because the soil is soft. yesterday after the earthquake it started raining. so automatically the ground is very sticky. so it's very difficult to excavate. and the heavy equipment works slowly. from the sludge, the team pulls the motorcycle but what sandy was hoping they would find where his france's mission for this tournament is clear back to back world cup winds. what it was, the of these that started strong matthew licky down the right wing with a perfect pass to crank goodwin who made it one bill for the down under dog after the 7 minutes played goodwin with a fantastic for a touch, leaving no chance for the french captain who read but you'll really enjoy did not last long. on game of mission back to back. well, joining me with the latest world cope action is philip hook now from dw sports. welcome to the studio, philip. so the big football story, of course of the, of day 3 in could tar and was pretty obvious, right. it was pretty obvious. saudi arabia's huge up that went against argentina, saw pretty much the entire world or brought a couple of statistics just to showcase how much of an incredible when this really was. so argentina going in as copa, america champions their 3rd place in the world in the fif rankings. saudi arabia, our 51st, argentina, was unbeaten for 36 games in a row. so all that ties in, they have one of the best players in the world with the on a messy, if not the best of all time, and still lose to one in the end. obviously, 3 off site goals. and the 1st have, as mentioned, could have made a difference, but in the end it did not end the aim for the on a message. so finally, phil has trophy cabinet with the last trophy that's missing the world cup. just got a lot harder. right. so a big shock for the argentinians, but obviously yeah, for saudi arabia, this must be a huge victory. right? must be over the moon scenes in the stadium. so fans are out of their minds with this huge when it was only players from the saudi professional league as well in the starting 11. so there's obviously a lot of pride also in the home grown talent, so to speak. and we also see fancier afterwards. we're just going crazy obviously, because this is a huge deal. king solomon actually announced right after the game that tomorrow was going to be a national holiday for the entire country. so gave everybody a day off just to be able to really celebrate this victory. and we also spoke to a couple of friends after the game. so let's see what they have to say. and so the out of saudi arabia made us proud today this year. it was just great. this game changed all rules and predictions in a way we never expected. bravo saudi arabia. i didn't imagine this would happen to him. saudi played like they were playing at home. this world cup number 22, which is in an air country, is pride for all of us. a this, when is considered to pride for all arabs for saudi and all era or i, philip? well, the world champions friends also got their campaign on their way with a pretty convincing victory. i'm frustrated, right? they did, and they're trying to break the champions curse. the past 3 work of winners have all excited the following. welcome in the group stages. and it looked that way in the 1st couple of minutes actually, australia were the ones to get on this course 1st and 7th minute. so bit of a port ending there by friends, but then things took their expected turns as friends then pulled back for goals. so we see 2 in the 1st half and then 2 in the 2nd half you in here are the 2 stars shining. the bright is there among the very strong french team, despite a couple of injuries than some are missing up missing country missing. but i think with this for one convincing when they're definitely still very strong title contenders. right, well philip, there's also been some development here in germany with regards to the wearing of the one love are bad or the actually not wearing of the one love arm band at which stands for human rights among them l g b t q writes and there's been a lot of controversy as we all know and tell us little bit more about the development from, from today. right, so all the countries were sets aware of this arm band, as you said, to show respect for all people. maybe some that are excluded by guitar. and today basically the news was that the countries have decided not to wear the arm. and because the fee for the consequence for wearing this are meant for the player that wears, it would be a yellow card. and that means if you get 2 yellow cards, there will be a suspension that you're facing. so this means it is actually taking, are going into the games themselves and not only monetary consequences for the association. so now germany has also said that they would take action against this legal steps against the fever, and also leave a big supermarket chain that has been supporting the german national team, has pulled all their support for the german national team in response to this because of a lack of empathy and really germany following through with what they promised to do, which is where they are meant. right, well, i don't think it's the last we'll hear about this. phillip now from the of the sports thanks. you're watching dw news up next is doc film taker. ah and we're interested in the global economy, our portfolio d w business beyond. here's a closer look at the project.
