j.r. martinez. we are coming to you on never a sunday. that goes back to when organizers were worried that the horses outside church services would be upset on a parade. they decided never on a sunday. that tradition continues. let's go to jessica on orange grove boulevard. >> the best part of the count down is to get up close and personal with the floats. and odd fellows and rebekahs, we'll check out those. and let's see what chris shaubl has in store for us. the weather is fantastic. it's very warm out here. i'll be showing you the city of glendale float and the us bank float. two amazing ones out of the 42. here's megan henderson. >> good morning, chris, i'm showing you this gorgeous float. the republic of indonesia. we are going to meet the horse calgary detachment. henry is out. what are you showing us? >> i have my share of great floats to show you as well. the bear float. microsoft in its first trip down colorado boulevard and let's not forget trader joe's. its tenth entry "it might just be the best." right now, down to our man on the streets, micah ohlman. >> thank you. i want to remind you about all the rose parade content you'll find on our website. ktla.com. we'll be streaming live. we have enhanced coverage of the royal court. renderings of all the floats. we'll be posting footage from the band cam providing an extended look and listen to all the participating bands. i want to take a moment to talk to some of the people who are ready. these are the low bleachers. good morning. where are you from? >> you didn't have to come far. you've done this before. you said in years past, you camped down the street. >> this is more cushy, i love it. what do you think is going to happen here with the camping. >> much more comfortable. now tho i'm older, it's nice to be sitting on a nice seat in front of everybody. >> but no home cooking here. you give a little and get a little. i want to send you at this point to the best advantage point. the box in the sky where bob and steph sit. >> good morning. what a sun rise. >> just to follow up a little bit about the b-2 stealth. it arrives at about 8:04. it's one of the highlights. when it goes by, it's chilling. >> it's remarkable. killman, the surfing dog is back with his friends. tillman p is a skate boarding dog. he wanted to expand his career. he got an agent, i think. last year, he was snow boarding. this year, he'll be surfing down colorado boulevard. natural balance dog food is looking to be something really special. we'll now toss to frank buckley to see whatever he's doing. >> we are with a great guy who will inspire you. he is winner of dancing with the stars. j.r. martinez. inspirational speaker, actor and sexiest man according to people magazine. >> it doesn't p matter the fact that it is this early. i'm so excited and looking to get into the car that they'll have me and my girlfriend and mother riding in. just sharing the message of imagine what 2012 can hold for all of us. >> you have such an incredible story. you were wounded in iraq in 2003. here you are a few years later on top of the world. what's the message you want people to take away as they see you? >> stay strong. understand not all the answers come when we ask the question why. it takes time to come. if you stay patient, the answer will come. it will be as clear as broad daylight. >> were you telling me that story a couple of days ago telling me how you become an actor. you were in a hospital room recuperating. >> i was held hostage. my mother would have me watching the spanish soaps. it's good to know what's going on but it's bad. i said to her jokingly, one p day i'm going to be on a show. it was never anything i aspired to do. i was being silly entertaining my mother. in 2008, there was an open casting call for a roll on all my children. i thought what do i have to lose? i did it. when i got the part, they said it would be a three-month roll. thank goodness it has turned into a three-year role. >> we just have a few seconds. i know the troops are so important for you. >> yes. outside of just saying thank you to these men and women. a lot of times they think we've forgotten about them. other things, you can find ways to raise money and help these guys and while they are recovering or getting treatment. take care of certain bills their family s. the government does a lot but there is still gaps. there's a lot of great non-profits out there. get behind it. >> thank you so much. thank you for your service. >> thank you, my friend. happy new year. >> megan, over to you. >> guys, thank you so much. we have so much more ahead including henry di carlo who is talking to two brothers who are living their dreams involving both flowers and outer space. and coming up next, jessica will be showing us the tree of heroes. we are coming to you live from beautiful >> a bear will be dramatic coming down the road. the path way to the stars. it goes from a garden up into the heavens. up in the stars, it's loaded with more strobe lights. even though it is daytime, it will be blinking. >> welcome back. i'm henry di carlo. representing the bear float. two brothers. these two brothers did that. i'm joined with rex and lance this morning. lance, let's start with you. my dad was a do it yourselfer. we lived in three different homes where he did all the work. i fell in love with the plants. i've taken it to the end. rex was more of a day dreamer. >> yes, i did. when we were working together in the backyard, i would daydream and thought how much fun it would be to fly. that's what i got to do. your brother put you up to something on one of those trips. he made you take a rose. he's been involved with the rose parade for 12 hours. he dried a rose and we put it in a plastic container. we didn't know if it would survive or not. we packed it away. all of the important p things i had to do, i had to check the rose. it was perfect. it was in the rose parade in the 2009 parade. when we think of bayer, we think of asprin. we use them over at the wrigley mansion. we'll help them grow parade quality roses. >> we are excited to see it. the best of luck to both of you. we'll send p it back over to you on this fine morning. >> good morning. it's great to see you. one thing you may not know is that they are created and sdwiened by a company named phoenix decorating that has 22 floats in this parade. nine by this lovely woman herself. >> good morning. you've been busy. you must be ready for a long winters nap. >> we are but believe it or not, we start designing next week for next year. this is pretty spectacular. yes, we did have a height issue going on. we did wha want to make the eagle tall and front of center. we had to make the tree of life here that goes down and under the parade route. >> is that a nail biting moment for you? >> every moment. the bald eagle's head. pappas grass. we have american heroes within the tree and mount rushmore. what's that made out of? >> poppy seeds, lettuce seed, ground onion. we found some rosemary bushes that make perfect trees. >> we are forever looking for new things to use on floats. >> it already got an award this monk. frank buckley, back to you. >> coming up next, chris is going to interview team estrogen. we'll let him explain that. and looking at the float from the republic of indonesia. we are live from pasadena. >> we are live here at the city of glendale float. they are spectacular. you will be inspired to say the least >> what do you think about your float? >> we think it is a great float. we feel it represents the anticipation of the circus coming to town. that's the same anticipation you would feel coming to glendale. in addition to the beauty and floral is team estrogen. here with me is cindy. tell us about this. >> my partner coined the phrase. we are an all female crew. my partner is the driver. we are proud of that and proud of our float. >> what does team estrogen bring to a float that is a gender neutral float? >> probably some warmth and compassion. we have a driver we want to work our way around to. lori. tell us what makes this float possible for the city of glendale. they invest so much time and effort for 99 years. it's a great thing. >> show us where you work. >> right here. my lovely compartment for the next couple of hours is right here. >> i know you will make the most of it. thank you so much. city of glendale float. megan, back to you. >> all right chris schauble. thank you so much. this is one of my favorite floats. the republic of indonesia. it's already an award winner. jo yes. we had a wonderful day. let's talk about this float and thescale of it. it's in two parts. >> it is in two parts. the floral presentation on here is primarily indonesia flowers from the orchid, which is their national flower. everything on here represents them with the symbols. >> what kind of a process goes into choosing what you use? >> i'll interpret in certain material that's are available particularly with this knowing the tropical material. featuring those. covering certain things to get that shiny black. that's sea weed. those are various types of seeds and other beans and materials. you interpret what you see into floral. what work goes into being this original design concept into breaking it down into each individual area. i work with a wonderful team. i bring a host of wonderful floral designers to work on these to do it so much like the icing on the cake. you work on 11 floats. that's a huge job. >> yes. each one is like your own child. >> jim also told me he is going on vacation first thing tomorrow. you are headed to hawaii. good for you. a big thanks to our beautiful dancers. you'll see them all throughout the rose parade. frank, back to you. >> our show is continuing. henry is going to show us some larger than life avatares. we'll check in live with the b-2 bomber in bound for the rose parade fly over. we are live from pasadena. >> good morning and welcome back. we have a fantastic float to show you. one gliding down colorado boulevard. this is the microsoft kinect float. this is their first float. what a project you took on. how did this come about for microsoft? >> microsoft was looking for a broader audience and they thought no better way than to bring it here to the rose parade. you can see all these giant avatars. this is really a great arena to jump in. we are telling them you can do it as a parent as well. you can get into the kinect and dance your night away. >> there's so much going on on this flight. you have music and high energy. tell us about what went into this float. take a look at the screen. interesting uses of cabbage tail and roses also orchids and purple iris. it's all on this float. the music and dancing, do you come up with that idea? does microsoft come to you? >> this is the yation of a bunch of minds i would think. we put it together and get together on an agreement. this will we one of the front runners because of the music and dancing. they are very first year in the rose parade. we'll be back to talk about the trader joe's float. it's a great one. right now, tossing it over to jessica holmes just down the street. >> this is one group that is had many rose parades. this is odd fellows and rebekahs. a beautiful float. good morning. happy new year. >> of course, you are the floral director for phoenix decorating and you are in charge of making sure all of these roses and tulips stay alive. how do you do that? >> it is tough especially with the heat we've been having. i make sure we keep everything ordered and on time. everyone thinks you just live in flowers for months. but you wait until the last minutes to put flowers in. >> yes. the last three days is when we put the flowers on. >> when you see the final product, what do you think? >> it's amazing. >> what great work you do. you've been a part of this for how many years now? >> personally since 1972. >> does it mean a lot to you to see this float make its way down the boulevard? >> absolutely. for people to come from all over the united states and canada and help us put those flowers on, it's fantastic. we really enjoy doing it. >> job well done. happy new year. good morning. we are here with captain john. you are a b-2 pilot. we are about 30 minutes out from that flight we all look forward to. >> death 3-3, would you like to say hi to pasadena. are you going to be on time today? >> we are going to be on time and looking forward to providing you a great fly over. >> you say it is down to the minute. the b-2 is within seconds. we should be down to the second. we spend time mission planning for a flight like this. to set up for a fly by, we know exactly what time we need to be ten, 15 minutes out from here and adjust east turn so as i line up down, i'll be just on time. >> talk about a mission in the resent past that involved such precipitation. >> we did something very similar in libya here. we flew three aircraft half way around the world and coordinated a strike releasing all of their weapons and aircraft so they couldn't bomb civilians anymore. >> fascinating. of course, we are moving every closer to the fly over here. we'll be waiting for it. for now over to frank buckley. >> thank you, micah. that is so impressive. coming up next, henry and i are going to learn to skate board from the street surfing team and we'llo back to the civil war era. you don't want to miss that. we are live from >> live from pasadena, this captain is with us live from fort hood, texas. tell us about your division. what do you do as part of the horse detachment. >> we represent the division three corpse fort hood at various ceremonies throughout central texas and the nation as well. >> it is a bit of history, isn't it? >> that is correct. it started in 1972 as a mounted color guard and grown since then. we've been in nine rose parades now. we travel around. we do demonstrations and parades. >> when folks see you coming, you you get their attention. >> you know who is really good on a horse? especially a wagon is megan henderson. she is looking great up there this morning. >> you are called the mule skinner. who? with you? >> this is sergent buddy. >> tell me what's involved with your job. >> to guide these mules and supply. a supply escort wagon. >> you've only been doing this 7 months. are you nervous? >> no, ma'am. >> good, go. sending it over to jessica holmes. actually frank buckley. >> the clock company here with one of the coolest floats in the parade. tell me about your company. >> we are the face mouse producer of the kitkat clock. we have been in business 80 years with it. it is an american icon. it's a lot of fun for having a clock that brings out the smile in you. we found this street surfing. tell me about that. this is the latest board out. it's an retro board from the 70's. it's new trucking and wheels and will be the biggest hit of the year. we see henry di carlo out there. look at him. look at him go. you see those boys from orange county really know how to ride their skate boards. there he goes around the corner. we may never see him again. >> thank you so much. we want to thank you. one of the things i want to tell you about the float. we have all california flowers. we've been california certified. >> love that. thank you so much. we want to send it right now over to jessica. >> coming up, henry plays a game of hot lava. hen p dockery and i take a chance with power tools. we are live from pasadena. we are live from pasadena. we'll be right back. never in my lifetime did i think i could walk 60 miles in 3 days. 60 miles in 3 days is-- is huge. if my mom can fight and beat breast cancer, i can walk 60 miles. you just put one foot in front of the other, and you know that you're walking for such a great cause that you just keep going. (man) that you have all these people coming together for one common goal. (woman) the goal is to bring an end to breast cancer. (woman) the fund-raising was the easiest part. people were very giving. complete strangers wanting to help. if i can do this, you definitely can do this. (woman) i'll never stop walking, not till we find a cure. (woman) and it has to end, but it starts with us. i knew someday i was gonna do this walk. it is the most rewarding experience i have ever had in my entire life. we can do tthis. you can do this. we can all do this together. (man) register today for the... and receive $25 off your registration fee. because everyone deserves a lifetime. >> trader joe's is always one of the funnest floats to design. this is called hot lava. this is probably something you might have seen as a kid imagining and come up with. people on this float are going to have a lot of fun. >> welcome back. we have trader joe's with us. they have been in the parade the past ten years. you always outdo yourself. i think you've done it again with this float, hot lava. tell us about this one. what would you do if your whole treat turned to hot lava. we put a trader joe's twist on it. this particular float so much an patient. how did you come up with integrating all of this? we looked to have a little bit of fun we have tennis racquets on ride -- hide rawle yiks. you have that sort of atmosphere in your business of community. everybody on the float works for trader joes. you did not out source and go for a casting call. we picked people that really embodies the fun spirit and had a reamly good year with the company. >> why the parade. pasadena is central to trader joe's. >> our first store was in pasadena. we really like to be a part of the community. what better way than in the rose parade. this is our tenth float. there may be some people out there that are unsure of trader joe's. what makes your story so special? >> we consider ourselves the neighborhood store. we have basic to exotic. 80% of our items are our own label. we are having fun. we want you to have fun too. it's a lot of fun. >> great job. so much detail and animation. you should be very proud. can congratulations. >> let's check out more with jessica. >> here to see how the rose parade floats are made. ready to get measury? >> let's do it. good to see you again. how many floats are you working on at any given time? >> we have 11 last year, 11 this year. everything starts with a model. they are like toys the first. >> we make a one inch to footscale model. we are looking at indonesia. this is how it starts and then that's how it ends. >> we wanted to do the national symbol of indonesia. we wanted a more detailed product. >> we are great with power tools. this is the lowering mechanism for the wings. i know you understand all of this and it is just rudement dockery. >> i got it. give megan and i a moment to rework this here. . i'll be back. we need to mark every three inches and 16 centimeters. in the end, we'll chop off the part that's too long. if they follow our calculation, this should be very accurate. wait a minute, were our measurement ps wrong? >> we have to start over on the other side. i thought we had it. she's a hazard. i'm ready to nail this. me too, tim. you actually want to get in closer. >> my gosh. you were worried weren't you? >> turn around and paint it. ok. >> nothing is coming out. push it all the way. there you go. keep going back and forth. ex-let. that's called cacooning. >> we install these flex foam panels. >> it's styro foam and glue? >> pretty much. >> this is probably something we can actually do on our own without tim. >> yes. you did a little welding, cutting, painting and got the whole process going along. you can really jump in and do then p tire process now. megan has been working on a little something. >> take a look at what we've done. not bad, right. >> you did a great job. there are 43 floats in the parade this year. coming up next, we'll check in with bob and stephanie on colorado boulevard as the excitement builds there and chris will show us an idea factory that will knock your socks off. we are live in pasadena, california. >> good mornineveryone, i'm stephanie edwards. happy new years. >> yes and i'm bob eubanks. in just a few minutes, you will feel the beginning. that will be helped by the fans sitting beneath us of the two football teams. they happen to by [whistle] and oregon. they will try to out shout each other. they'll have a little help from the cal poly kids who are across the street where micah ohlman is. >> by the way, we are hoping to give you a little trivia between events this year. i'd like to start by telling you how many kinds of glue is used on these floats. do you know? >> four times of glue, flora glue for fresh flowers, sticky glue, white glue used for seeds and other dried materials and spray adhesive. >> enough, enough. i can't take anymore. chris, where are you? >> someone else who might say the same thing. the floral director for the u.s. bank float. tell us about this. >> it won the theme award. that's great. it's got a conveyor belt with roses that turn into whatever in your life you can imagine. going to college, getting a car, a house, we have gears turning. it's a factory of anything you can possibly imagine in life. >> tell us about the man hours and detail that went into this. there's hours. day after christmas we start decorations and work through until right now. >> thank you so much. someone else is very, very proud of this float. the regional manager for us bank. >> it's great to be here. happy new year to you and your family. >> tell us about the commitment you have to this float. >> this parade just unites the whole nation and reflects so much about our community. we like to redefine ourselves as a corporate citizen. >> what's your reaction? >> good morning. i hear you make it down here every year. >> we do. our friends have been coming for about ten years now. it's my first time bringing my son. i got him up early. >> what time did you get up? >> around p 5:00 in the morning. >> i love that this is a tradition. that's what we notice that it really is a family event p. what are we hoping for the new year in 2012? >> health and happiness. does anybody have a favorite? >> this is my 49th rose parade. >> that's amazing. throughout the year we add more and more people. this year, our family from australia stayed over some extra days just so they could stay for the parade. >> what do you want to share with your family and friends? >> mostly the tradition. my parents started coming in 1960. they brought us. we just love coming every new year's day and looking at the floats. >> which one is from australia? >> what do you think so far? >> they are very flowery. that's a good description. i like that. happy new year to all of you. sending it over to chris schauble. >> this family, all related is their first rose parade. >> was it hard getting the kids up? if so, was it worth it? >> yes. it was hard. it was worth it. it's our first time here even though we are pasadena residents. >> what's your name? >> audree. >> are you having fun? >> yes. >> are you excited to see the rose queen, drew washington. she's beautiful, isn't she?
