evening, i'm annette. the feds are focusing their investigation on a wayward part. reno police say nine people died when that world war ii plane crashed into the vip seats at the national championship air races. seven people, including the pilot, killed on impact on the tarmac. two others died at the hospital. authorities now say 69 people were treated at area hospitals and 38 have been allowed to go home. >> crash happened at 4:30 yesterday afternoon at the reno airport just north of reno. and joe vasquez is there tonight. >> reporter: federal investigators have been pouring over that wreckage. tonight, they allowed a video camera in for a closer look. one day later, the horror of the plane crash scene is evident on the reno said airport tarmac. debris spans out more than an acre wide. a crater 3 feet deep and 8 feet across marks the spot of one of the country's worst air show disasters ever. david wilson shot this video. a vintage p51 mustang called the galloping goat began to climb, then made a strange sound, plummets to the ground and broke into a million pieces. shrapnel ripped through the bodies of dozens of spectators in the vip section up front. >> i saw so much material going up in the air. i was stunned. everybody was stunned. >> witnesses are calling jimmy a hero for ditching his plane on the tarmac. >> i think that pilot in the last two seconds pulled up because he saw the bleachers and i would guess he probably saved 200 to 300 people. >> he would not be able to tolerate the fact that there was anybody hurt, much lez die. >> what went wrong? investigators with the national transportation safety board are on the scene right now trying to find out. they say video and photographs are going to help their effort, including photos of a broken piece of the plane's tail. >> a component has been recovered in the area where that was observed. i think it's critical at this point to know we have not identified the component. it will be examined, so we don't know what the component is or if it came from this particular aircraft. >> brad was taking photos of the air race, the broken tail could seriously have impacted the plane in flight. especially if it didn't come completely off, it's going to change the attitude of the plane. it would be like turning your steering wheel sharp on the freeway. you're going to flip over. >> in a recently recorded youtube video, it took five years to modify the ghost. making adjustments to the wings. >> we cut five feet off each side of the wings, which brings it down to 32 inches versus about, you know, 60. >> family members are still reporting people missing. people who were in that vip section in front of the grand stand, so as you mentioned, more than 60 wounded, nine dead right now, but we are expecting those numbers could change over the next couple of days. >> joe, let me ask you. you see this plane comes down in the vip section. are the planes flying over the spectators? >> the planes are flying in a lane, if you will. they call this a sort of aerial nascar. they have lanes over the tarmac, not necessarily over the spectators. somehow it lost control. the pilot lost control. it's amazing he was able to keep from going into that grand stand the way he did. >> we think this is bad, it could have been much worse. the future of the reno air races event is uncertain after yesterday's crash. critics are asking organizers to cancel future races because of the accident. 20 pilots have been killed since the races began 47 years ago. this was the first time spectators have been killed. school officials say if the races continue, they will re- examine whether school children should be taken on field trips to the races. and for the latest on the crash and to hear the spectators were injured in this crash. officials say the pilot was flying a post world war ii plane that performs at air shows around the country. he lost control of a six plane formation and crashed near hangers at the airfield. volunteers searching for michelle lay today found human remains. the badly decomposed body was discovered in a brushy area. this was the eighth time the volunteers searched in the area since the nursing student disappeared in may. they searched that area because the last signals from lay's cell phone were in the niles canyon area. the body was badly decomposed and was unidentifyable. >> those things are always difficult because weather plays a part and animals and all these different things are factors in that. it has not been here a long, long time, but it hasn't been here a short, short time either. >> officials say it will take several weeks to identify the body. a high school classmate of lay is under arrest on suspicion of murder. san jose police are searching for a man who is accused of a crime spree yesterday that ended with a death of a woman who had been carjacked. as don knapp reports, the city is offering a reward to help find him. >> the city of san jose put up a $10,000 reward for the information leading to the arrest and conviction of mr. castillo, or whoever is responsible. >> the reward is offered to get an extremely violent murder suspect off the streets. what police are calling a one- man crime spree left the body of an adult asian woman in a san jose home. a home with ties to the man police say is responsible. police suspect 33-year-old paul ray castillo is the gunman. >> we didn't just pull his name out of the air. we believe to be a violent criminal. somebody that we need to get off the streets immediately. >> the search led to a possible sighting around 6:00 last evening in the area of king. >> officers attempt to stop the vehicle, the suspect accelerates toward our special operations officers and one of the officers fires in self- defense several times at the vehicle. the suspect flees on foot into the townhouse complex at king and mayberry. >> an overnight search failed to find castillo. police found the body of cindy nguyen. police say nguyen's car was carjacked and she was kidnapped noon friday at the plant shopping center in san jose. she had earlier called her office to say she was having car trouble, that a latino man offed to help. she was not heard from again. an hour before nguyen was kidnapped, a man pumping gas at lincoln was shot in the stomach. when he didn't quickly comply with orders to turn over his cash. police say the 5'92"10-pound castillo is extremely dangerous and should not be approached. >> this is definitely serious when you have a person rob an individual at gunpoint and shoot him. turns around and an hour later, kidnap a separate individual. so we definitely feel that he is a danger. >> male robbery victim shot in the stomach yesterday was hospitalized, but expected to survive. in san jose, cbs 5. two cal grads could be free as early as this weekend. josh and shane have been held on espionage charges since july of 2009. now the iranian coming up next. ,, shots rang out in san the bars and strip clubs just closed for the night when shots rang out in san francisco. it happened shortly after 2:00 this morning on the 400 block of broadway in north beach. ann on the police shooting that injured innocent bystanders. >> police confirm that two innocent people were accidentally shot at 2:00 this morning on broadway on san francisco's north beach. it started as police were trying to catch a wanted man on foot. they say he pulled out a gun so the police started shooting at him, but they missed. a man and woman in their 20s were hit with stray bullets. >> these people were complete bystanders that were not involved with the incident. >> we did speak with two women who were eating pizza nearby when they heard the shots. >> everyone came outside and they were like, i heard a shot. >> there was a lot of confusion and it looked like an officer had been shot. >> there was one cop on the ground. and then eventually got into his seat and he stumbled off. >> police will confirm there were injuries to the bystanders and everyone is expected to live. the officers involved are on paid administrative leave as the investigation into what happened continues. >> we want to make sure that we do the analysis both quickly and thoroughly before we offer what we think was activities that occurred and the unfortunate injuries of the pedestrians. >> we are responsible for every round that is discharged, of course, and as you know, an object in motion stays in motion until making contact with something, unfortunately in this case, it was two bystanders that were struck. >> in san francisco, cbs 5. each of the two bystanders were shot were hit in one of their legs. they were treated and released. the suspect, 20-year-old jesus rodriguez is in jail on charnels of assault and weapons violations. >> other bay area headlines, crews working on a tunnel got a refresher course today to prepare them in case of an emergency. they practice scenarios like what to do if one of the vehicles catches fire. the crews are working on the project. thousands of volunteers pitched in this morning to help out in this year's coastal cleanup day. they pulled thousands of pounds of plastic bags, food wrappers, and cigarettes from the coast and local waterways. special attention went to guadalupe river park in san jose, which earned the top trash hot spot in the area. and thousands of people join their best friends in san jose for one of the country's largest dog festivals. bark in the park got underway at william street park this morning. it included contests for best pet tricks, owner and pet look alikes and even the best tail wagger. a lot of people wagging their tails today. >> if you like today, you are really going to like today. we have more sunshine headed our way with warmer temperatures continuing into the beginning of the week. finally, summer has arrived across the bay area with only five days left before fall starts. we see mostly clear. a few patchy, low clouds, but very few. we'll look for the flow to continue with a warming trend expected and as mentioned, fall officially begins on friday. finally, we have summer weather to talk about after a cloudy and cool pattern. today we saw mid to low 80s in the warmer locations. east bay into the mid to upper 70s. mid 60s on the peninsula and the beach today under mostly sunny skies. we'll be warmer than this tomorrow as once again, we see things warming up into the beginning of the week. tonight we'll look to mid to upper 50s under clear skies for a change. just a patchiest of fog at the coast and a bit of haze across the area through the day tomorrow. otherwise clear and warm with low 70s in the city. low 80s in the south bay. we'll look for air quality a little bit through midweek, as this high pressure system sets up over the region. that will be a sinking air mass and an offshore flow. it will result in a stagnant air pattern, but a warmer week ahead. we are not headed to the triple reading. mid to low 90s. through midweek before things start to cool down. just in time for next weekend. as we look across the state, we see mostly clear skies for a change in the mid to low 90s. quickly moving by through the central valley. and just a few patchy clouds bumping up against the coast tonight. shouldn't even be there first thing in the morning as it will dispate early, as we will look for temperatures again in the mid 80s across the south bay. morgan hill will be close to 90. low 80s to mid 70s in the city and on the peninsula. mid to upper 80s elsewhere as the warmup continues into the north bay into the mid to upper 80s there and as mentioned, warmer yet into the beginning of the week as we see mid to low 90s through wednesday. nothing too hot, but a nice warmup to take us into fall, which officially starts on friday and we'll see a slight cool down with a slight chance of
