after helping his companion into a kayak. they were swimming and got caught in a current at 2:15. the dive team is helping to search for the body. a happy ending to a search for a missing hiker. he became separated while hiking. crews were searching by air and with canine teams. this morning a helicopter spotted the teacher in an open area. we are told she is okay. bruised and scratched but that's it. new information is coming out about that deadly police shooting last night at a bart station in san francisco but there are questions about what happened last night. here is david stevenson who is in san francisco tonight. >> the shooting prompted the closure of this station last night. today we are learning more about the suspect. >> reporter: bart police say it was a routine call a man carrying alcohol at the station. it ended in his death after he wheeled a knife and a bottle against two officers. the officers, one with six years experience, the other 18 months, arrived at 9:35 p.m., within aman one offer shot the suspect. he died an hour later. >> the guy is armed with a knife, used a bottle as a weapon. one of the officers is injured. our officers are -- used the force they felt was necessary. >> one officer was armed wataser. it's unclear -- armed with a taser. it's unclear why he didn't use it. >> i am comfortable with what has occurred. >> reporter: surveillance video shows part of the incident. >> i remember one woman was carrying her bicycle and she was crying but she said the cops killed someone. >> reporter: he heard 4-5 shots while standing on a plan form. >> i hope it's one of those things they did it as a last resort. they had no other options, i hope. >> reporter: the officer suffered a minor cut. both are on administrative leave. police are investigating the shooting. reporting live, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> bart implemented new training in wake of the oscar grant shooting in 2009. officers receive 40 hours of training per year. law requires 24 hours every two years. tripping includes conflict resolution. officers carry tasers, batons and pepper spray. detectives are working to determine if shootings that left three men dead last night are connected. deputies responded to a shooting in northridge last night. they found two men wounded. one died that scene. half hour later police found a 19-year-old man shot dead in a car on center avenue. 15 minutes later a third shooting outside a store. one man was killed, another wounded. >> we have not had any indication that any of this was going to happen. we haven't had shootings leading up to this. >> police haven't made any arrested. there was another shooting at 8:30. two competitors at the junior olympics in san jose jumped the gun. the two boys got into a fight outside the ring before the competition on saturday. it's unknown what started the fight and unclear whether charges will be filed. everyone is getting ready to watch fourth of july. you will want to know a couple of things, clear or foggy and what should you wear? our meteorologist is here with answers. >> patchy fog a little bit of fog out there. let me show you what is going on. this is what it looked like as we speak. it is eroding. this is good news. this is the latest. it pulled back just a little bit over the last hour and looks like it is doing one of these. we will see patchy fog over the area, shouldn't be too big of a deal that impact your fireworks show. look at what we are expecting at 9:00, 50 along the coast, 60s for the bay area and inland 75. we will look at what you can expect tonight and tomorrow coming up. right now we want to show you a live picture of the bay bridge toll plaza. folks may be headed in to san francisco to watch the big show. now we want to move to the golden gate bridge, looks like it's pretty clear in both directions tonight. many fourth of july celebrations got underway early today. thousands watched the parade in san jose. it included floats, cars, veterans and other participates of all ages. >> why do you come? >> to celebrate america's birthday. >> we saw all the army reserve and stuff on the truck. he was yelling thank you, thank you. >> a big festival that included food, games and activities. >> folks lined to see the streets to see this independence day parade. 170 floats and 2500 participates. the parade kraut rout is the second longest in the nation, 3 miles. some residents started the fourth of july with flapjacks. a pancake breakfast but on by on organization that promotes community events. it was followed by a flag raising ceremony and a concert. thousands spent the fourth of july outside today. besides the parades there was plenty of music, pick nicks, bbqs, boat rides and street tefestivals before firefighters put it out. officials say it was started by illegal fireworks. coming up in 10 minutes, the steps being taken to make sure the celebrations don't end with more destructions. all hands on deck at fire stations. investigators are looking for the cause of a apartment fire that left 26 without a home. firefighters say the fire may have started in the garage and spread to the upper floors and the buildings on either side. one person was hospitalized and one firefighters suffered a minor eye injury. >> i heard a vehicle honking and people saying get out of the house. get out of the house. looked out the window and saw the smoke. >> the red cross is helping the people displaced and firefighters rescued two dogs. animal care and control is assisting those residents. the group homes not jails tress passed into a building in san francisco's mission district. the action is designed to raise awareness about homelessness. christian has more. >> we are here at mission. 2525 scoters occupied this building. you can see a bunch of them on the building there. they hung banners and occupied that second floor, you can see where the open windows are. organizers say this building is a perfect example of what is wrong with housing in san francisco. there are 42 units of housing here that sat unoccupied for years. >> people say we don't have the resources to house our 10,000 homeless people in san francisco, but there is places like this and 32,000 other units that are empty. we have the resources. >> reporter: organizers tell me the rights of people who need housing outweigh those who own the property and let the properties go. if you look here, this is where they gained entry. there are about 25 people here. they will be working on an ordinance to tax proper owners to let their properties go. they will occupy this building till san francisco force them out. ktvu channel 2 news. if they weren't confusing enough already, new recommendations on only at denny's. america's diner is always open. . investigators tonight are looking into whether fireworks ignited a blaze that destroyed dozens of rental cars. 45 cars were charred. the cars were parked close together on a grassy lot. wins reported hearing fireworks before seeing the lot overwhelmed with smoke and fire. crews removed a plane off of interstate 280. it made an emergency landing on the north bound lanes yesterday. it just took off from the airport when it had problems. good news, no one was hurt. the only damage, a broken window on a car. new information on the topic of you get mammograms should be personalized, based on your own personal risk. >> reporter: most women should not get frequent mammograms, based on breast density. >> a woman's frequency should depend on the density. even as it does on age and other risk factors. >> the notion of a woman's feelings about getting a mammogram. the assurance and the risk of worry from a false positive on the other. >> i got nervous about thinking i might have breast cancer. >> about a 3rd of women who get mammogram will have a false positive. >> triggering unneeded biopsies. >> it is a cost saving measure but it or jogging at night because that's when the animals are active. bears are making their presence known, this black bear made an appearance on ktvu's morning on two this morning. the bear didn't cause any problems, it just wandered off into the forecast. they put out oo warning last week to remind campers to be mindful of bears. and skiers are celebrating the fourth of july today. no parkas were needed, temperatures in the low 70s. the conditions were fantastic considering it is july. it last opened on the fourth of july in 1995. squaw valley and kirkwood also opened today. dry conditions in the bay area have firefighters patrolling the san jose foot hills incase fourth of july spark trouble. >> it will start a roof on fire and that could spread to a neighborhood. we ask people to
