little patriotic, and i'm i'm jack man. it's gonna be fun watching with their fellow team usa supporters makes every moment more intense and at the soccer tournament can be away for nations to come together in the spirit of gamesmanship. it can bring enemies together. the united states will play iran next week, and that's an exciting chance for us with one of our biggest enemies geopolitically but to have a soccer competition. it's an amazing thing. great for the world great for the united states, the us got off to a strong first half, scoring a goal in the 36th minute. look at how you're playing. amazing football dominating the midfield , giving them a few chances to possess the ball. um and most importantly, taking the chances that we get that excitement carrying the team to halftime. fans who play the game say it was a different team that came back out onto the pitch, less confident playing not to lose rather than playing to win. but then the second half they're more like frantic and then, like wales was kept attacking, and they were kind of nervous and they were just kick it out, and i don't know they just kind of looked shaky and second half wales scored their own goal in the 86th minute, tying the match . young players say they're hoping the us can bring a little more of that first half energy in their next match up. i think the u. s could have been a lot more offensive in the second half, just because like like we want to win. it's the world cup. this is a big tournament. think i would just tell them positivity. maybe. like, um. i could, like, pump them up and get them to believe in their self. and world cup action continues the u. s faces england on friday. if you want to join the crowd, there will be a public watch party and union square. you can stay on top of all of the world cup action by checking out our website ktvu .com backslash world cup you'll find tips there for times when the games are going to be on the viewer watch parties. that kind of thing. it's a great time to watch football. we are live in san francisco ktvu box two news . it looks like a lot of fun out there today, christian. thank you. alright so here's how things potentially could play out moving forward and how they stack up for team usa for the non soccer experts out there in world cup. there are eight different groups, and each of those groups has four teams playing each of the other three teams in the group. the top two teams advance to the knockout stage. teams get three points for a win one point for a tie. and zero points for a loss. alright so team usa is in group b with of course, wales, england and iran. so they tied whales today and then again as christian mentioned they play england coming up on friday. england, by the way, a very good team, a tough opponent and england is expected to beat team usa. so if the u. s loses that match to england, they will have to be to ron in order to have a chance of moving on. and if the usa can muster up a win or tie against england, then their odds of advancing go up considerably since iran is a game that they are expected to win several captains of european men's national teams are saying that they will no longer wear an armband that was meant to promote lgbt q. plus rights and inclusion says they plan to penalize any player who wore them. it has a rainbow colored heart with the words one love. the armbands were seen as a protest against qatar's treatment of the lgbtq community . fifa was originally going to find the teams but decided they would issue a yellow card to any player who wore one that would put them at risk of missing future games. i don't know what's going to happen with me coming out. i was told i should have been aborted. now that the whole world is looking at my country, we have the chance to bring global visibility to my community. this is nas mohammed and he is the first gay qatari to publicly come out and fight for lgbtq rights in his country guitar to avoid being tortured or thrown in jail because homosexuality is a punishable crime in qatar. he's now living and working as a doctor here in san francisco, and we are honored to have not joining us live today. thank you so much for being part of the four today in this conversation. yeah thank you for having me and for holding that part of the conversation and coverage of the rock cup. we want to ask. first of all, i am wondering if you can share what kind of emotions that you felt hearing about fifa's decision to penalize the captains and also qatar's own position, not changing its stance despite hosting this international event, you know, there were a lot of you turn moments that qatar had that i think are concerning, um, the decision to ban alcohol. a day before the competition was a concerning gesture because ingestion that qatar wasn't able to commit to the promises that they made. and then we had this second gesture that came from fifa today, and it's frankly really disappointing because the reality of the local lgbt community and qatar is very dark. and is being challenged by a false image that's being projected to the world right now during this fifa soccer world cup competition and the truth is, there are no, um official country conditions reports on what happened to lgbt qataris. so for people like me that had to flee and seek asylum, that path can be challenged by the false pr and marketing for the roco and we're trying to bring visibility to this issue, and peter wasn't willing to commit to things that are as simple as just wearing an arm bath to signal that there are issues that need to be addressed. earlier this year. as we mentioned in the setup, you became the first qatari to come out as gay. i'm curious if you can talk about what, what it was that led you to that decision and how it's changed your life. so i loved qatar 11 years ago and filed for asylum and then living in the united states. um i currently live in san francisco. i knew a handful of lgbt qataris. it is extremely dangerous for us to organize in any way as a good community in qatar because we are hunted by the law enforcement in qatar, and when an lgbt person is found the law enforcement tried to aggressively found find everybody else. let's connected to them. so we have been trying to but the stories and the truth out anonymously. um, out in the world as qatar is preparing to host the world cup because the gay fans are welcome narrative is not how qatar handles that issue of lgbt rights and qatar. however this was very ineffective without a public voice. so on may i came out publicly on bbc news, english and arabic to have the platform for us to speak up, but also to allow other lgbt qataris inside and outside qatar to reach out and organized which we have done . then i have been connecting them to documentary filmmakers in germany and london to publish some evidence based reporting on what's going on with us. and then i connected several victims of abuse to the human rights watch to issue an initial report on the country conditions and they put this out about a month ago and after interviewing several victims, they issued a report stating that the law enforcement in qatar is indeed arresting and subjecting lgbt categories to physical torture and um, well treatment in detention. including forest conversion therapy, so there is like very, very, very severe persecution that we're going through and right now, to be quite honest. when i came out, i became the anchor for everything lgbt related in qatar to doing this type of work, but i'm also having conversations directly with different football federations that are going to put our because there is nobody else talking about lgbt rights and then i'm also having conversations with different legislators in different countries and had a conversation with lgbt organizations and where i am now is that i formed and you non profit for us that should be doing all of this work. and i have an active protest called the probably more rooms. um and the problem of ruins is basically the way to bring awareness. um and restaurants for the nonprofit did during the world cup. what kinds of things could the global community do to try and help not just during the world cup, but also once that spotlight shifts after the games? despite where you know like that's that's really because right now what we need there's a huge boy for advocacy for lgbt rights in qatar right now, and we need first of all more research right because it's. still in evidence . what happens to the community to working on solutions? then we need to support the people that are there. now that need help. we need to lessen the severity of the persecution and we need to help the ones that need to get out actually get out and then we need to continue having conversations and doing advocacy work. so all of these pillars now fall under nonprofit, so i believe if somebody wants to support assets to print the cause. there is a very clear way to do that. right now. you can bring the awareness. you can share our stories. i have a couple of campaigns going on in one campaign on my social media and tell him one lgbt qatari story per day so that people know actually what's happening to us and the other campaign is the proud of maroons. um, which people can follow it on proud moments .com and what it is, it's basically a way to highlight. the discrepancy between what's offered to the global lgbt community this year and the treatment that we're facing as a local community. alright mohammed, we really appreciate you coming on to share your perspective and more about your mission. thank you for the time. thank you for having me absolutely. investigators are still searching for what motivated women hold 39 seats. but following this midterm election that is on track to increase to as many as 50 seats, or 42% of the 120 seats in both the state assembly and senate and joining us now, as you see pictured here is state senator nancy skinner. thank you so much for joining us on this to be with you. i am curious. you joined the state assembly first in 2008. how was it going? and then compared to now, where you have the 39 seats and possibly even more when i got elected in 2008. that was a great year to a lot of women got elected, and so we were at a high of something like 26, or 27 . women in the total legislature and we were so proud. but then, after 2008 we started going down again. so we went to the low twenties and we picked up a little here and there, but in 2016, we were still in the maybe high twenties. that's when the women's caucus, which i am now chair of we made a concerted effort. we decided we have got to get to gender parity. we want 60 women in the state legislature. so we began to work with other groups up and down the state women's organizations to recruit women to support them . and to really push that, you know, just create all of the infrastructure needed to help them. and so we got up to 39. so in 2022, you know that we were up to 39 women. and now, as you pointed out with this election, we now have 50 women who will serve in the state senate and the state assembly and what kinds of actions does it take? because oftentimes, people say, you know, certainly were not progressive state. you would think there are a lot of really smart, capable women who you would think would be, you know great candidates. well many women would qualified and not to say that men don't think about whether they are but in general what the surveys show the studies is that men just think, of course. why should be a legislator. it doesn't they don't think twice about what kind of qualifications and so many women. we have to help them . see? no there is a role for you. we need every type of person. california deserves every type of representation, so we need to help those women feel comfortable. and then, of course money. you have to run a campaign in state of california . it's expensive. our assembly seats are close to the same size as a congressional seat. our senate seats my i have more constituents than any congress member. so are i have more constituents than many state governors. a lot of ground to have to cover yes, and so it's expensive and we help we give political contributions to the women. we introduce them to people. we really helped them to get elected and real quickly. what do you think needs to happen to get the goal from 50? now up to that, 60? how do you think you know you the caucus or even people in california? what needs to happen? well i think number one. many more women are activated. now they see the possibility we've already you know, you take that kind of leap, and there's already women who see the possibility. and with the threats to things like our abortion rights and other i think we're seeing the voters respond, so that also helps part of why we had this victory this year, i think was very much that women started to feel like i need my rights protected. i need women in office to ensure that so i think that's going to really put us in a good shape for in the next election cycle to get up to that number that we want. all right, well, state senator nancy skinner thank you so much for joining us chair of the legislative women's caucus, and the swearing in is going to be the first week of december, so we'll get to see some of those people taking their seats. alright, wonderful to see. thank you both. this week. people are packing airports to go visit with family and friends all across the country and more than 2.5 million passengers will be boarding planes on the sunday after thanksgiving. but the question is, are the airlines ready for that holiday rush foxes? grady trimble has more now from chicago. the number of people flying each day has been at or near pre pandemic levels for some time now. in fact, triple a says this thanksgiving will be one of the busiest for travel in more than two decades. but there are questions as to whether the airlines can handle the rush this holiday travel season, especially after the mass delays and cancelations in the spring and summer. even though almost as many people are flying, as in 2019, the airlines have cut routes because of the shortage of pilots and other key staff like mechanics and flight attendants that smaller supply combined with strong demand and high jet fuel prices means you're paying a lot more to travel this turkey day. the travel booking app hopper says. domestic airfares up about 8% before it's like 200. um wants something, but now it's like 67 800. others hopper says. if you're looking to save money on flights and hotels, the best time to buy this time of year is the tuesday after thanksgiving. they call it travel deal tuesday and say you can save as much as $300 on your trip. in chicago. grady trimble, fox business. transportation secretary pete buddha judge joined chicago mayor lori life today to announce that construction can begin on a major project at chicago o'hare airport. the plan is to build two new concourses and expand aqui terminal, but it it says he is quote cautiously optimistic that the holiday travel will be off to a good start. he says that overall airports are running more smoothly than this past summer. the chicago o'hare expansion will include an increasing gate capacity by 25% and will also add restaurants and amenities such as a new airline lounge. well the holiday shopping season is set to shift into high gear by the end of this week, for sure, and many people have new smartphones tablets or other electronic on their wish list this year. but cybersecurity experts say those new devices come with risks as hackers are working especially hard this time of year to take advantage of unsuspecting users for more now on how to keep your data safe. we're joined by zayn bond from keeper security security software company. great to have you on here, zain. we appreciate the time. so if you get a new device of some kind as a gift this holiday season, what are the most important steps that you think people should be taking right off the bat to protect their private information from hackers. alrighty absolutely. so i'm on christmas day everybody is excited to play with their new toy, and they may be in a rush, so you may have the opportunity before christmas day boot up the device. make sure security updates are installed. maybe create the account when you have the time to ensure you have a, uh good, insecure password on the devices. all right. so what ? what? what happens if a hacker gets ahold of just one of your passwords? how likely is it? do you think that they would be able to access information from other accounts? yeah this really depends on how prolific password reuse is amongst your devices. do you reuse a password or a variation of it? is this, um accounted using the same on your bank accounts on your email addresses. if it is, then re use of those, you know, compromised credentials could be quite prolific. what do you think of the most serious mistakes that people make after they get a new device of some kind? a smartphone or tablet of some kind? what is what are the most serious mistakes? people tend to make that you want them to look out for? yeah it's if it's a device that has a default password on it, you definitely want to change. you know the defaults if there's any type of an update or a security update, you want to install that many times when attackers are trying to get into your devices? they'll leverage. um some form of a known exploit or attack and not in times of patch will prevent that. um and then, of course, as mentioned, you know, password. rias is really a big problem. yeah, i know. you recommend us doing something called auditing, auditing all your current passwords. what exactly does that process look like? sure absolutely. um if you have your passwords stored somewhere, i'm take a look at them. the most likely candidates . you want to ensure our secure are your most sensitive accountants most of the time, and the email address is used, um as a recovery for any of the other accounts, so make sure that password is secure and make sure you have multi factor on that account. that way of that one account is compromised. can't be used to reset passwords all over the place. um then, once you get past your most critical accounts look for really weak passwords. you know, things that are reused are definitely a risk. and if you don't have your password stored somewhere and you, you're just using a variation of one password. you're probably already failing the audit. alright important advice. there's some some good steps that probably take care before you before you open up those new toys that this this holiday season. we appreciate the advice zain bond from keeper security. thank you for doing it. thank you. more turmoil for twitter and some major organizations go back and forth on whether to pause their use of the platform . we have one texas tech expert who is going to weigh in pleasant weather in the forecast for the holiday week ahead. i'll have a look at what you can expect on thanksgiving day plu twitter after elon musk's take over the social media platform is still up and running. but with hundreds of engineers and other key employees gone from the company, there have been serious concerns from users about the safety and privacy of the platform. because of that uncertainty, some companies have decided to leave twitter or stop using the platform for the time being. the fashion brand. balenciaga deleted its account, while playbill and cbs news announced they were pausing their tweets. cbs has since reversed that decision, all right, for more on all the issues at play. here we are joined by ahmed ben arfa, san jose state engineering professor and cybersecurity expert. professor always good to see you . well, what do you think it was that that prompted these various companies to leave twitter? and do you think there are concerns about security on the platform are legitimate. well i believe so because you're talking about the company that used to have 7500 employees with different engineers. and now to totally about 75% of the people of the staff left, you know, half of them left
