>> reporter: mitt romney hopes new hampshire will give him the landslide victory he couldn't get in iowa. >> talk about a squeaker. talk about a squeaker do you think we can do a little better here in new hampshire? maybe? yeah! >> reporter: with senator john mccain at his side, he urged supporters to show up at the polls tuesday. a new survey shows romney holding a commanding lead in new hampshire with 43%. >> what you need to do, i'm asking you, is to make sure that we send him to south carolina with such momentum that it cannot be stopped. >> reporter: but the rest of the gop pact is trying to slow him down. >> governor romney, in the end, has a very limited appeal and a conservative party. >> reporter: newt gingrich slammed the former massachusetts governor wednesday, while rick santorum tried to build on his own growing support. >> we can move up and show momentum here too. >> reporter: now that michele bachmann is out of the race, santorum could get yet another boost. picking up her conservative supporters. >> there they are. >> reporter: despite placing fifth in iowa, rick perry plans to keep fighting. >> all our friends in new hampshire and south carolina, get ready. here we come. >> reporter: as for jon huntsman, he says the race is still wide open. >> we have been kicked around as people. we are getting screwed as americans! >> reporter: today, he'll begin airing his first tv ad in new hampshire, a state he is counting on to kick-start his campaign. and another sign that romney is feeling so confident about new hampshire, he is heading to south carolina today to campaign with the governor there. that primary is held on january 21st. betty? well, one theory is that the driver took a curve too fast and jumped the curve all the way onto the roof. the driver suffered a broken leg, but no one in the apartment building was injured. good luck getting that down. in brownsville, texas, police shot and killed a 15-year-old middle school student when he threatened them with what looked like a real gun. some students said the eighth grader threatened to kill everyone in the school wednesday. police fired three shots when he refused repeated demands to drop the gun which turned out to be a pellet gun. it was a weapon that was actually observed by school personnel and taken as a threat that it presented as a potentially deadly weapon. >> police have not determined why the boy brought the gun to school. no one else was hurt. it is a process that helps extract oil and gas. but state officials in ohio now believe that injecting waste water near a fault line created enough pressure to cause a minor earthquake. several of them, in fact, in the area. as michelle miller reports, that is sparking changes. >> reporter: john armbruster is is a seismologist at columbia university. before march, there had not been a recorded earthquake in youngstown, ohio. since then, there have been 11. so ohio state officials asked armbruster to investigate. >> these earthquakes were sitting there waiting to happen. we have triggered these earthquakes. >> reporter: armbruster believes the trigger was this youngstown well contained contaminated water trucked in from pennsylvania and beyond. the water is a by-product of oil and natural gas extraction called fracking. the disposal well pumps thousands of the gallons of waste of rock into a mile or more below. armbruster said it may have made its way into an earthquake fault line. >> pumping the fluid into the fault, encourages the fault. >> reporter: drilling companies and some scientists are skeptical. 177 similar wells in ohio have operated without incident. the technique has been used since the 1930s and more than a hundred thousand wells across the nation. tom stewart is with the ohio oil and gas association. >> it has happened with regularity and regulatory excellence and the best way to take care of this waste stream. >> reporter: clusters of small earthquakes near wells in oklahoma, texas, and arkansas have also grown scrutiny. >> first of all, the location of art megarr is with the u.s. g geological association. >> first of all, the location of the earthquakes is quite close to the wells. secondly, the timing of the waste water injection also coincides with the earthquakes. >> reporter: as for ohio, officials have shut down the youngstown well, until they can be certain of the risks. michelle miller, cbs news, new york. straight ahead, your thursday morning weather. and in sports, joe torre managed the dodgers and now he wants to own the l.a. baseball team. bat. eabat. mbat. at. t. . less. system. is this your normal?
