ann arundel county you may have some wet pavement. we'll watch this rain for the next two or three hours. after that temperatures may briefly dip into the upper 50s. we'll get back to 65 by lunchtime. beltway at liberty road traffic is moving at a good pace. definitely use caution before you head out. no problems to let you know about so far on the beltway. we have traffic building southbound on police carry guns protecting us and themselves. it came in handy for one off- duty baltimore city police officer after crooks tried to rob him. we are joined now with an update on the off-duty officer who was shot. >> reporter: according to baltimore city police the officer got out of surgery at 2:30 this morning. doctors are optimistic he will recover. this unfolded before 10:00 last night. according to investigators the off-duty officer was leaving work and walked into his home when two men walked up to him and tried to rob him. gunfire erupted. the officer returned fire and shot one of the suspects in the leg. incident put neighbors on edge. >> we never had nothing like this before. i have been here seven years. never had nothing like this. i watch my back. i don't trust nobody. it can be an old lady. if you don't live here i don't trust you. >> reporter: police are talking to two people of interest. officers will hold a news conference later this morning with more details on this case. this morning baltimore county police department is mourning the loss of one of their own. 32-year-old officer jason simons died in a car crash yesterday afternoon in the 3500 block of black rock road. he is a seven year veteran off- duty arriving into work. an investigation shows he was heading east on i-70 in a pickup truck. >> three minutes after 6:00. a 13-year-old baltimore girl is in intent sieve care this morning because of h1n1. this virus we have been hearing so much about. destiny parker is in the 8th grade in northeast baltimore. she got sick in school on monday and her parents took her to the hospital. baltimore sun says the girl was getting stronger yesterday. the school system sent a statement out saying the building would be cleaned according to health department procedures. charles manson following susan atkins who admitted killing actress sharon state 40- year-old died. he was 61-year-olds old. she suffered from brain cancer. earlier this month she lost her final bid for parole. survivors argued against her release. federal prosecutors say two north carolina terrorism suspects plotted to kill u.s. military personal and had maps of the marine base in virginia to plan the attack. an incident against daniel patrick boyd is the first time authorities have said that the men were specific targets. they were arrested back in july. prosecutors have described boyds a an extremist who loathes the american military. they found dozens of guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition in his north carolina home. they say he could have used them on marines in virginia. the group of 20 nations is going to become the permanent council on global economic cooperation. this will replace the group of eight major industrial nation's who were original council. g 8 will continue to meet on matters such as national security. president barack obama initiated the move. it will be announced at the g- 20 summit later on today. bob dillon may have coming down heavy. we have been talking about the rain passes on the north side. towsend we have the wet stuff on the beltway. all the people are waiting in line to get tickets for springstein. it is raining two blocks north of them. the rainfall continues on the north side. westside of the beltway we have had sprinkles. there is our wider view. burst of rain coming through. d.c.'s getting it. if you are going south on 95 you'll hit this stuff through virginia this morning. the back edge is clearly seen. as we are looking at 65 degrees this morning. 62 york and 50s in central pennsylvania. we are watching the back edge of this bands of rain sliding through. as we watch that we are showing a north easterly wind. that will keep the temperatures down. we may drop more on the thermometer this problems to let you know. if you are headed to d.c. there is a cash on the outer loop of the capital beltway at rockville pike. that blocks two lanes there. jfx traffic moving along at a good pace. this deadly explosion we wanted to show you at a georgia sugar plant refinery was presentable according to a report released by the u.s. chemical safety board. sugar dust ignited the plant because the facility was not cleaned properly. the board says dust ignited last february causing two explosions at the factory. 14 people were killed. 40 were injured. imperial sugar has not responded to the report g-20 economic summit is going on in pittsburgh. leaders of the world's biggest economies are meeting there to hammer out financial reforms to prevent another global meltdown. timothy geithner says they will be bringing in banker's bonuses. geithner says these reforms make take effect now. the government is expected to report a slight increase in new home as far as august this home sales this mornin . sales dropped 3% last month after rising four straight months. analyst warn it could get worse with the $8,000 first time home buyer credit set to expire soon. chrysler's board of
