from what we found, the way only they've changed them at this point is they my drive a little farther to find cheaper gas. the last time average gas prices have been anywhere near this high was back in 2008. it was july 17th of that year when the average hit $4.01. a look at the price at the pump in our area, whether in d.c., maryland or virginia, and the message is, been there, done that. >> i really don't have anything to say. what can you do? >> reporter: indeed ours is a carcentric culture. not all of us can say we have a gas benefactor. for those of us who drive for a living, there's no way around the higher consequences. most days he has to hack ten hours just to make ends meet. >> every day i'm spending $65. it's really hard to pay rent -- it's really hard, man. >> reporter: is the pain at the pump prompting people to change their driving habits? tom kierein joins us with our first forecast. good morning, tom. >> good morning, eun. another cold morning. we were down near freezing around down again. but since then we've warmed back up. there's still some cool breezes blowing, all those areas in blue, still in the 40s. the areas in green climbing into the 50s. reagan national is at 526789 low to mid 50s, maryland, virginia, eastern shore. a few place hs the eastern 40s along the blue ridge and skyline drive and some of the high spots in west virginia, up in pennsylvania in the mid and upper 40s. there's the view from space over the last 12 hours. high pressure pushing in and a gorgeous sapphire blue sky over the region now with those cool breezes that are around 15 to 20 miles an how. they will be with us throughout the afternoon with lots of sunshine. afternoon high temperatures climbing into the low 60s, by mid to late afternoon. another cold night tonight. we'll talk about that, look in detail at the weekend and into next week. that will all be coming up in a couple minutes, eun. high levels of carbon monoxide are to blame for a man's death. the man was found in the 6800 block of putnam road last night. he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. investigators found a running lawn mower inside the garage and believe that is the source of gas. new from overnight, police are looking for the person responsible for shooting a man in the district around 1:00 this morning in the 3500 block of georgia avenue in northwest. the man was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to the chest, arm and leg. he is expected to be okay. no arrest haves been made in this case. prince george's county police are looking for the suspect who murdered a district heights woman. police say wednesday morning they found the body in the 2100 block of brooks drive. she was identified as 32-year-old raquel israel. right now detectives don't have a suspect or motive and urging anyone with information to call prince george's county police. she claims she had the golden ticket. now she says she lost it. the baltimore woman who says she won a piece of last week's record breaking mega millions jackpot is changing her story. she spoke exclusively with news 4. melissa mall lay is here with more on this bizarre twist. >> we're all guilty of misplacing things, our keys, our cell phones, but a $105 million lottery ticket, that's exactly what herland wilson. it's been one heck of a week. monday she told she said she hit the ticket and reportedly told the new york pest the ticket was actually hidden inside the mcdon't's where she worked. now she says that's not true and tells us exclusively she doesn't know where it is. >> are you going to claim the ticket? >> if i find it. >> did you lose the ticket? >> i misplaced it. >> wilson's mcdonald's co-workers say if she did win, they're entitled to some of the cash. 15 of them pooled together and asked wilson to buy the tickets. but she says the ticket she's misplaced was bought for her by a fend at this baltimore 7-eleven, though her story has some people wondering. >> here is the bottom line. did you win mega millions or did you make up this story to get attention. >> i didn't make up no story to get no attention. >> wilson goes on to say she wants her life to return to normal. the stress of this situation is giving her high blood pressure. >> i don't even have time to look for it. i don't want to look form it. it's too much stress, too much drama. >> the other winning tickets were bought in kansas and i'm know. no one has come forward with a winner. lottery officials say the maryland winner has until september 28th to claim the cash and can remain anonymous. they're encouraging anyone who bought a ticket to check it again. melissa, thank you. coming up, a change of heart. why more free tickets are available for a concert in mineral. the behind-the-scenes work to pick a republican candidate for president. the white house easter egg roll, welcome back. in decision 2012, conservative leaders are trying to come up with a plan to rally behind presidential candidate rick santorum. they met with santorum in northern virginia. an official close to the campaign claimed fiscal and social conservatives want to pressure rival newt gingrich to leave the race. right now mitt romney is the front-runner for the republican party's nomination. many conservatives have long doubted his conservative credentials. santorum is far behind the delegate count needed to clinch the nomination. santorum is taking the weekend off the campaign trail for easter. it appears virginia has avoided a government shutdown. virginia lawmakers reached a tentative agreement on an $85 billion budget last night. it will keep the commonwealth operating for the next two years. negotiations nearly broke down over a dispute on funding that would prevent steep toll hikes on the dulles toll road. dem crass pushed for that additional money. republicans were able to keep it out of the final agreement. lawmakers will vote on the budget april 17th. today is one of the holiest days of the year with observances for good friday and the start of passover. good friday is a solemn day for christian commemorating jesus christ's death on the cross. at sundown today passover begins. president obama and the president will mark passover by hosting a sater at the white house. on sunday they'll host the annual would white house either egg roll. this year they'll focus on health and wellness. more than 35,000 people are expected to attend this year's event. any minute now the white house will announce which celebrities will be there. we'll tell you who a little later right here on this show. ♪ where were you when the world stopped turning ♪ >> alan jackson's benefit concert is more charitable now, releasing 3,000 more tickets. originally organizers were charging concert goers who don't live in mineral $42. the town is still recovering from august's 5.8 magnitude earthquake. the money raise friday the may 20th show will go to help rebuild the loisa county high school. >> hopefully good weather for that. what's going on here? >> i used to cook mexican food when i lived in philadelphia. i opened up a couple of restaurants. it's something i enjoy doing and it kind of popped up. >> how do you think yours is going to be different? what's the mike isabella flare going to be? >> i'll take classic dishes and try to reinvent them and have fun with it and use local products and keep the flavor profile there. >> speaking of fun dishes and adding your flare, this is a crab taquito. >> it's kind of like a crab salad that i put into a crab taco shell. i have little taco shells here. this is a vegetable. >> it's like a chip. >> yes, tarra root. we put them in baskets and deep fry them. it's like a potato chip. >> basically i'll take some purple potatoes, dice them up. i blanch them already so they're already cooked. >> do you add any seasoning to the potatoes when you cook them? >> i put a little salt in the water. i put a little red chilli. >> that looks a little spicy. >> it's a little spicy. just a taste. you want to cut it up as small as possible. it's how much heat you want to really put into it is what you want to do. so i cut it really small. it's kind of like minced up. we'll do the sail same thing with the onion. it becomes a fresh salad so you get a little onion. you get a little bit of chilli. a little bit of cilantro in there which is a very big -- >> this is the cilantro. we'll put everything in the bowl together and you can buy the crab -- crab is very popular in maryland. it's not hard to find here in any of the stores. >> what's this right here? >> a little scallion for garnish at the end. to bring it together, we'll start with the crab, put little crab in the bowl. then we have a little bit of our diced chilli. some people like more, some people like less. >> i like it pretty spicy. >> this is purple potato, red onion, cilantro. >> it's so pretty, too, because you add all the different colors. >> exactly. which gives it a tropical floif vor from the coastlines of mexico. a little coconut milk here. >> what do you put in the coconut milk? >> there are secrets in here. you can't know everywhere. >> this is a coconut milk sauce. >> yes. chilli in there, cilantro in there, a little ginger which you wouldn't expect in the mexican cuisine. >> that's your added little flare, ginger and coconut milk. >> exactly. >> squeeze a little fresh lime juice. here you have it. a little salad and take my taco chips that i pre cooked and pop them in the shell. with these these little taquitos -- one more little step, we'll put the little tacos. >> on top is the mashed purple potato? >> yeah. i took the scraps after i cut it nice and boiled them. you could eat it. it's more for serving purposes at the restaurant so it looks pretty, not laying down on the side. you get the feel of a taco. >> is this going to be on your tasting menu at band layer row which is doing a preview atta tackle box in a few weeks? [ male announcer ] well done mom! less drama, more fun! totino's pizza rolls. welcome back. right now on "news 4 midday," a case of good news, bad news with the latest jobs report. the economy added 120,000 jobs last month, but it was well below the expected number of 200,000. the unemployment rate did go down again to 8.2%, a three-year low. the same calls to police that prosecutors intended to use against george zimmerman could now be used in his defense. nbc news reviewed neighborhood watch calls zimmerman made to police. since august he called seven times. in each case zimmerman never mentioned the race of the man without first being asked. his new attorney says that's proof that zimmerman is not racist. >> this is a guy who comes from a multiracial family, multiracial neighborhood. he has friends that are african-american. >> if zimmerman is only identifying the race of subjects in response to a question, that is very helpful to him because it doesn't establish evidence of a racial motivation on his part. >> the fbi is reviewing the tapes as part of its investigation into possible civil rights crimes. marion barry is apology for comments he made about asian-owned businesses in ward 8. >> we have to do something about these asians coming in, opening up businesses, these dirty shops -- they ought to go. i'll tell you that right now. we need african-american business people to be able to take businesses, too. we'll work on that, too. >> was the d.c. council member and former mayor tuesday night. barry is clarifying those comments. he said he meant to say he wants all the businesses in the district's poorest ward to clean up their acts and get more involved in the community. >> we're going to try to attract as many businesses as we can, as many restaurants as we can, as many corner stores as we k. they've got to be a part of the community. they can't come in here, take our money, take it to virginia somewhere, don't support nothing. that's what i'm talking about being, making our community a better place to live, a better place to work and to welcome business people. >> barry claims he helped bring asian-americans into city government. other city council members criticized him for tuesday's comments. they also said they welcomed his apology. high school graduation is a couple months away for thousands. fewer than six in ten students in the district may be getting their diplomas on time. district education officials say 58.6% of students in the class of 2011 graduated within four years. 73% of students graduated on time a year earlier. education officials blamed the declining graduation levels on new federal standards which tighten up how they calculate graduation rates. the gazette is reporting the school board is looking at adding 40 minutes to the school day in prince george's county. school district officials say each principal would be responsible for figuring howout how to use that extra time. the plan would actually save the district about $5 million because of fewer buses needed to bring kids he. well, from earth to outer space, maryland senator barbara mikulski gets a stellar honor, a supernova named after her. the hubble telescope spotted superknow va mikulski 7.4 billion light years away. she was presented a framed picture of the massive exploding star that's eight times bigger than the sun. they named the astronomy archive after her. the senator has been a strong supporter of space exploration. a fitting tribute to the senator. let's check in with tom kierein to get the latest on the forecast. >> right now we're getting into the 50s throughout much of the region. and with this dry air and the wind swirling around, the pollen count has jumped. it's not quite as high as it was last week, but allergy sufferers are noticing it's mostly oak, mulberry and sick moo tree pollen. it will range in the high range today and tomorrow. we may get relief on sunday with the showers coming in. we have signs of spring around the region. i took this picture a few days ago. this is the south side of the memorial bridge. you can see the kennedy center in the district between the fir trees there. tulips are up and looking gorgeous. the park service does an outstanding job with the flower beds all around washington. right now 52 at reagan national and in the suburbs, rural areas most locations around 50 degrees as well as around the bay. out of the mountains, a few locations still in the 40s. later today around 60 much of the region. winds blustery, gusting to around 25 miles an hour with bright sunshine, clear and cold tonight, afternoon highs tomorrow in the mid 60s. blustery for sunday, upper 60s with sunshine. that my wash some of the pl len out of the air monday afternoon. the cool pattern continues into next week. that's the way it looks right now. eun? >> it was more difficult than i could explain because -- and even while we're hearing all the stories going on in the news now. i new whitney very personally. she was a close friend of my family, would come visit my mother when she was sick. my sister sang with her for seven years. she was a wonderful woman. i was in africa when i heard about her passing. her mother asked me to come in and sing. to sing at the funeral, it was surreal because at 48 years old this was an untimely death and it was something that really caught the world, not just america, the world by surprise. to have to lay my sister to rest -- i would have rather not sung. i would have rather not sung because it's too close to home. >> all right. we are sorry for your loss. but we congratulate you for your successes. good luck on saturday. it sound like a very exciting show. >> you better come and see it. >> can i bring my three kids?
