Sr. Dorothy Stang, a human rights and environmental advocate, was an American-born member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur working in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. Her work to support peasants and prevent deforestation led to threats from loggers and ranchers. She was assassinated Feb. 12, 2005.
