Is Impeachment Still Really a Thing? Part II Posted on: May 12, 2021 Written by Cal Jillson, Author of Impeachment in American History Twenty-one “civil officers of the United States” have been impeached by the House of Representatives over the course of American history. Fifteen of the impeached officials have been federal judges, one has been a senator, another a cabinet secretary, and three have been presidents (Trump twice, of course). The Senate has taken up each of these impeachments, eventually, but has not always completed the process with a decision on guilt or acquittal. Only three federal judges have been impeached by the House, found guilty by the Senate, removed and disqualified from holding federal office in the future. Five more, again all federal judges, have been impeached, convicted, removed from office but not disqualified from holding federal office in the future – one of those, Alcee Hastings, was subsequently elected to Congress.
