killing 8 people at 3 atlanta area massage parlor. 6 of the victims were asian. 7 were women. >> the attack was the worst mass killing in the country in nearly 2 years. that was since the shooting left 9 people dead in dayton, ohio, from august of 2019 authorities say they don't know if long ever went to those massage parlors where the shootings happened. but that he was allegedly heading to florida next to quote, attack some type of industry. wong told police that the attack was not racially motivated adding that he lashed out because he quote, saw the parlors as sources of temptation for his addiction. according to mister long. >> you know, he said it was not racially motivated that he saw these massage parlors as something that that was in causing him to do things he shouldn't be doing and has a at 6 additional. >> so you heard there, the cherokee county sheriff's talking about that. he is now receiving some backlash himself today with many questioning him downplaying the possibility of racial motivation while talking about the shootings baker said that yesterday was, quote, a really bad day for the suspect. there's also a facebook page that's now been associated with that spokesperson that prompted a a t-shirt and racist language about china and the coronavirus. so far he though, has not responded to any questions regarding that post. meanwhile, long remains in custody tonight. i'm justine waldman kron 4 news. thank you, justine. the attack comes at a time when violence against the asian-american community is on the rise across the country, including the bay area. >> ucsf chancellor good offered condolences on twitter writing. our thoughts are with the families of all the victims. we grieve with those who have been affected by this crime. ucsf stands with our asian american colleagues friends, family and patients will continue to add our voice to the call for greater awareness and action to stop the spread of discrimination and hate members of the from the increase in attacks on asian americans, january 2884 year-old man was knocked to the ground serviced and fortune avenue. >> he later died february 14th an 83 year-old man was attacked on that 200 block of church street february 23rd a 67 year-old man attacked and robbed at a chinatown laundromat march 15th a 59 year-old man attacked on the 600 block of market and march 17th an 83 year-old man and a 75 year-old woman or attack near un plaza, all of them asian americans, local leaders are coming forward promising change. >> asian americans everywhere you know, are on and have felt for a very long time. fear for their owns, for our own safety now is not the time. >> to continue to accept hate. against a particular community. now is the time to uplift and to support and to embrace. >> in the last year. there have been more than 800 incidents against the asian-american community across the bay area in an effort to increase security. there will be a higher police presence in valley neighbors kaiser error would move its corporate offices and a half dozen of its aircraft, including the boeing 7.37 as kron four's. michelle kingston reports, neighbors are not happy about the airport are tired of the planes flying over their homes all day long. the biggest concern is the quality of it's loud. you can't really be outside. they say the sights and sounds of flights have only the livermore airport commission voted unanimously to support kaiser airs proposed development which includes moving its headquarters corporate offices in fuel storage from oakland to the tri valley. they also plan to move 6 aircraft including a boeing 7.37 while this vote doesn't make the plan a done deal. it has some neighbors concerned. >> more than 4,000 people have already signed this change. dot org, petition. well, the pollution and the noise. >> but also safety. and home values as well. >> we reached out to the livermore airport commission and kaiser air but have not heard back in livermore. michelle kingston kron 4 news. >> students in castro valley return to the classroom today kindergartners at chabot elementary return to in person instruction. part of the district's 5 phase opening. the superintendent says all educators have had the chance to be vaccinated first and second graders set to go back next week, followed by 3rd through 5th grades and all grades are scheduled to be back in the classroom by april 12. in san francisco high school athletes can start playing some outdoor sports in less than a month. the school district says baseball softball tennis soccer track and field football practice outdoor basketball practice can resume april 12. there will be no playoff for championship games and no games with schools outside the district middle school outdoor change clouds already moving to north skies today kind of creeping on through keeping the temperatures down. the winds start to pick up along the coastline. those winds start to switch direction, more of a southerly direction be picked up in this is the reason why look at that last storm of winter winding up along the coastline and approaching the bay area. some clouds moving out ahead of it. but the front not moving on shore just yet. that will come a little bit later tonight and i think on and off throughout the day tomorrow. we'll see rain throughout the entire bay area right now. take you for a closer look. you can see things are mostly dry right now double as the moisture in the atmosphere being picked up and you need a good trigger here. the list ability atmosphere to get that rain pandemic forcing a spade college to change course on its admissions process. what it means now that mills college is transitioning into an institution. we feel like celebrating and they did exactly one year after the pet, the pandemic began inoculated residents of east bay, senior living community. they were able to gather together for the first time and we will show you how they celebrated mills college in oakland after this fall. the school transition to become mills institute following the change mills institute will no longer give students degrees. current students will be able to finish academic programs with final graduation ceremony. tentatively planned for spring of 2023 those colleges been in oakland since 1852 school officials say declining enrollment budget deficits in costs associated with the pandemic. we're leading causes for this change. >> some students at the mount diablo unified school district could be back in classrooms as soon as next week and tentative deal worked out between the school district and the teachers union highbridge in person learning would begin march 25th for pre-k through second grade and 4 days later, 3rd graders through high school seniors will be back in class, at least part time full-time distance. learning will still be an option. the plan would keep all students in distance learning in the morning with those in the hybrid program coming to campus 2 afternoons a week. that deal is expected to be ratified voting began today. >> time now for 4 zone forecast kind of cloudy and cool out there. yes, a little blake and chief to get throughout the day on and off. so, yeah, be prepared. you're going to see some rain all the last storm of winter. of course, spring beginning on saturday. but the storm system just going to start getting going here. so yeah, late winter storm. the rain begins to 9 right after midnight. probably see a few showers moving in stormy thursday throughout the day. then periods of gusty winds, especially on the coastline. maybe some gusts of 30, maybe some 40 mile an hour gusts along the coast over the mountain tops moderate amounts of rainfall, probably about a quarter of an inch to half an inch in most urban areas, maybe more than an inch. maybe an inch and a half across some of the mountain tops and lots of snow up in the sierra nevada upwards of 4,000 feet or so another foot, maybe a foot and a half across the higher peaks. here's the storm just kind of winding up out there out we've had some warm funnel clouds kind of slide across our skies throughout the day. stay mostly dry. this is all going to start to move on shore as it gets a little bit closer. those winds really start to ramp up as we head toward tomorrow morning. in by the middle of data, a look. some of these gust of 31 miles an hour. coming up on the south in the half moon bay team. the san francisco 22 in sandra fell. but shell the colors around the bay area. those winds gusting at 3040 miles per hour. but let's time it out for as we head through the night tonight looks like just after midnight going to see a few scattered showers moving in. then as we get into tomorrow morning. certainly if you're traveling early on tomorrow, 08:00am or so. a lot of rain out there that will continue through the middle of the day as well. even in the afternoon, it will move a little further to the south of the south and break up a bit. but scattered showers likely to continue on and off right on through the day tomorrow and then maybe a lingering shower actually on friday to looks like that will be the end or wintry weather least our winter official stormy weather. but then after that, of course, we've got some spring storms likely to come our way too news. still ahead, a day. for the first time. covid deadline has come and gone. so what's the next step for the governor and the state. the dea submit signatures in support of recalling governor newsome of that deadline ended this afternoon. recall organizers. they've been saying for some time that the have collected more than the required one and a half million required signatures to force a special election. as for what happens now kron 4 sanaz tahernia explains. he's not willing to accept that. there was a different way. things can be frustrations regarding governor gavin newsome continue to mount in california as the deadline to submit recall petition signatures is here. frustrations surrounding issues like covid-19 homelessness unemployment and education. organizers say they've collected more than 2 million spgnatures since the recall efforts began in june 2020 and reports say that 80% of signatures submitted so far are valid. but having enough signatures isn't enough to force a special election. >> here's a timeline of what needs to happen before the governor can effectively be recalled once all signatures are submitted election officials in each county have until april 29th to verify them and notify the secretary of state who then has 10 days to determine whether the recall threshold has been met. if the threshold is met. the lieutenant governor will then schedule a recall election which could take place any time between the 6th and 26th of october recalling the governor is a time consuming lengthy process, but one that supporters feel is necessary to tackle the big issues in our states. californians are hurting their are. there was other ways to handle this. >> and the fact that 58% in the recent emerson poll say they don't want gavin newsome to run for reelection tells you they're ready to move on some rescue california downward has set a record raising 3.0. 1 million dollars towards the recall and participated in the 2.1 million signatures that were gathered over a 3rd of which came from democrats and independents. if the recall election does happen. governor newsome would face off against at least 3 republicans in the special election. former congressman doug ose, former san diego mayor kevin faulconer and businessman john have all said they're ready to challenge newsome while millions of californians support the recall efforts. there are many that don't state assemblyman rob bonta says the recall is a republican power grab led by extremist groups that the proponents are. >> she won on conspiracy theorists and anti baxters who don't believe in science and folks who believe that that that presidency was stolen. 3 per centers. you those organizations that affiliate with the proud boys. one of proponents literally has stated that he believes that undocumented immigrants should be microchipped. and so that's who's behind this that people should know about. we did a poll to find out what californians feel are the biggest issues facing the state. and according to our
