The president of a powerful national teachers' union has defended teaching the controversial 1619 Project that aims to reframe US history during a heated debate with Fox's Martha MacCullum where she argued it was 'a factual version of oppression in America'.  
During the segment, Randi Weingarten - the president of the American Federation of Teachers - denied that the project pushes the idea the United States is a racist country. 
The 1619 Project, which was published by the New York Times in 2019 to mark 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived on American shores, reframes American history by 'placing the consequnces of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the center of the US narrative'.
