"Touchdown confirmed," she announced to applause from the mission control staff at the United States agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. "Perseverance safely on the surface of Mars, ready to begin seeking the signs of past life." The Perseverance is the largest and most advanced rover Nasa has sent to another world. It reached Mars after a 203-day journey traversing 472 million kilometres. Packed with groundbreaking technology, it was launched on July 30 last year from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. It will attempt to collect samples from Mars and return them to Earth.
