going off peacefully. hello. it is 5:00 a.m. in washington. i m monita rajpal. i m zain verjee. also ahead, a cnn exclusive as the italian prime minister faces trial, a woman who spent time with him talks to us about the sex scandals, the parties and what berlusconi s really like in person. the stuff of legends. coca-cola s recipe is so secret the recipe is locked away in a vault. has the mystery been revealed? best in show is the hound. and he may not look like much but the shaggy dog won best in show. we ll tell you why. we begin this hour in the middle east where popular dissent is sweeping the nation. bahrain is the latest place caught up in it all. thousands of activists are in the capital city today pitching tents in a public square and calling for reform. protesters say they want jobs. they want housing. and elected cabinet and for the long-serving prime minister to be kicked out. the protests have been mostly peaceful so far but police have killed two protesters in the last two days. one of them was shot during the funeral procession for the other. today, thousands of people marching in a procession for the second protesters killed. on tuesday, the king addressed the nation promising to consider reforms and investigate the deaths of the protesters. bahrain is a really small nation in the persian gulf and one of washington s key allies in the region. the u.s. navy s fifth fleet s based there. the population about two thirds shia and the ruling family is sunni. it s linked to saudi arabia by a 26-kilometer causeway built across the sea. 17 million people use it every year. the u.s. says it is very concerned by the violence and the killing of the protesters in bahrain. the state department says it welcomes the government s promise to investigate and it s appealing to all sides in bahrain to show restraint and stop any violence. let s get more on the situation on the ground. editor of the bahrainian newspaper watching this unfold an joins us on the phone. tell us a little bit of the situation overnight in terms of safety, security and whether or not these protests are really gaining momentum. yes. during the night the protesters since they re not here, they were possibly 2,000, 3,000. in the morning, many of them went for the funeral of the second person who was killed. they re back now. it is about 1:00 in bahrain. i am at the ministry of the roundabout. they have more organized today. there is a central speaker who s chanting slogans and somehow saying from poets are delivering their poems. there s a [ inaudible ] management of the traffic. all self regulate. i cannot hear any other than a helicopter going around the crowd here. the people are now sir, let me interrupt there, sir. these are the pictures of today. this is what s happening right now in manama today. i want an idea in terms of whether or not these protests are really getting the ear of the parliamentarians, the government there and seems to be a sense of someone s listening and watching what s going on. oh, two things that happened. number one, the king has appointed an investigation committee. and then interior ministry said that they have suspended the group s responsible for or suspected to be responsible for the killing of the two citizens. this does not this does not seem to be pacifying the protesters. there s also another development. a person who s from the community addressed the gathering last night. his family says he is not with them anymore. they suspect he has been detained. he stood for election but did not win and lots of people taking the microphone and speaking saying with a demand of further saying basically that dismantling of 2002 constitution, demanding the stacking of the government and basically raising up the their aspiration for what they want to achieve. okay. sir, thank you very much. man soor al jamri there. a ground swell of discontent also seems to be emerging in libya, egypt s neighbor. police broke up an anti-government protest overnight but this morning state tv s reporting that youth rallies and marches were held in several cities but in support of gaddafi, the leader of more than 40 years. elsewhere in the middle east, protests continued in yemen tuesday for at least the fifth day in a row. pro- and anti-government protesters clashed. a human rights protester said they were attacked with sticks and rocks. at least ten people were injured. governments in the region really trying to control these protests, one country is cracking down the hardest. iran sent a strong message to its people and the world. attempts to overthrow the government will not be tolerated. cnn s brian todd reports. reporter: ominous signals of iran s rubber stamp parliament that the wave of protests will not play out like egypt s. iranian lawmakers chant execute them. open threat to iran s two main opposition leaders. one of them used to lead this parliament. now, he and another are blamed by lawmakers for inciting this week s protests. tens of thousands took to the streets inspired by the egyptian uprising and hoping to stir up a second major challenge to their islamist government following the green movement of 2009. iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad accused the west and israel of trying to create discord coming as president obama spoke to reporters with a stronger message of support for iran s protesters than we have seen before. the president accused the iranian regime of hypocrisy, celebrating egypt s protests and crushing their own and stressed that america can t dictate what happens in iran but in the very same sentence encouraged the protesters to persist. my hope and expectation is we are going to continue to see the people of iran have the courage to be able to express their yearning for greater freedoms and a more representative government. reporter: an increasingly dangerous proposition. scores of people were killed and imprisoned in the 2009 uprising. just last month, the e jeem executed at least 66 people. most reportedly for drug offenses but the united nations says some were political prisoners. is that a lot of executions in iran for one month and speak to some kind of maybe nervousness on the part of the regime? it is significant. since january you have had almost an execution every nine to ten hours in iran so they have certainly gone on an execution binge and the executions and imprisonments create an atmosphere of fear and terror in iran and why when you have tens of thousands of people continuing to protest, it s significantly important because they realize their life is in danger. reporter: will the leaders heed the calls from lawmakers and arrest the opposition aders or worse? we tried to get answers. defiat repeted calls and e-mail, we are not heard back. let s see what newspapers around world are saying. the headline is this the national iranian opposition flares back to life. risking cracked skulls, arrest and long-term jails, they look to the streets in significant numbers for the first time in a year to prove that the iranian opposition is resilient and strong. and take a look at the irish times saying today. iranian deputies call for death penalty for opposition leaders. the paper quotes members of the iranian parliament saying opposition leaders are corrupts on earth and should be tried. that was according to iran s official news agency. check out what they re saying in canada in the national post. u.s. urges protesters on in iran. quoting president obama, the paper goes on to say, i find it ironic that you ve got the iranian regime pretending to celebrate what happened in egypt when, in fact, they have acted in direct contrast to what happened in egypt by gunning down and beating people who are trying to express themselves peacefully in iran. one issue many views. you can read all those articles in full at facebook.com/w1cnn. you are watching world one live from amanda knox is currently appealing her murder conviction. italy s silvio berlusconi s expected to make the first public comments since being ordered to stand trial on charges of having sex with an underaged prostitute and abuse of power. the prime minister s likely to be asked about the scandal at a news conference in rome today. he is alleged to have a liaison with this girl, nicknamed ruby the heartbreaker and accused of abusing the position trying to get her released from jail after she was arrested for theft and denies he s done anything wrong. berlusconi says he thought she was related to the former egyptian president hosni mubarak and trying to avoid a diplomatic incident. he ll stand before an all-woman three-judge panel in april. one of the women who was vine itted to berlusconi s parties is speaking out. nicole manetta is former tv showgirl and now politician and also under investigation for allegedly finding prostitutes for berberlusconi. she swoek exspoke exclusively to dan rivers. reporter: did you introduce ruby, this young girl, to the prime minister? no, absolutely not, no. reporter: at what point did you know that ruby was a minor? was under 18. the night that i went to the 27th of may. yes. she had told us that she was 24 years old and that wasn t hard to believe because she seems much older than what she is actually, yes. reporter: did you think that the prime minister knew that she was a minor? absolutely not. he did not know her real age, no. reporter: describe to me what happened that night. how did the prime minister appear on the phone after ruby had been arrested? i remember that there was this brazilian girl and told me that ruby was had been stopped because she didn t have any documents with her, any i.d. and then it came out that she was under 18. so, we stopped until 2:00 in the morning because, obviously, she didn t have any i.d. and the police were trying to find the i.d. reporter: did the prime minister call you during this process? yes, yes. we yes. a couple of time. i think i called him, as well, to let him know how the things were going and, obviously, he was quite worried, as well, because, i mean, we were young girls so i called him to let him know that everything was okay, that we were okay. that the girl was okay. and how things were going during the night. this was not how the evenings used to finish. i mean, in any way, absolutely not. there s a music room, let s call it. in which there can be some soft music rather than more modern music but i would not absolutely describe it as nightclub in any way. reporter: some of the evidence suggests that you were topless at some of the these parties, that you were dressed up in some sort of uniform. is that true? have you ever been topless in the presence of the prime minister? no, i haven t. reporter: you re laughing i m laughing because it seems it s it s very much i mean, laughable. that s all i can say. reporter: so you completely deny that you procured any women for the prime minister for prostitution? yes, i deny that. absolutely yes. he s a really great man. he s generous. he s good. good in the heart. the great thing about him is that he believes a lot in young people. he s not afraid of believing and investing in young people. reporter: so you would deny ever having received money from silvio berlusconi? well, he helped me in some situations. i mean, he s he doesn t have any problems helping people. even in an economic way. reporter: how much money did he give you? that s a detail which i wouldn t go into. reporter: thousands of euros? it doesn t matter. that s not the matter. reporter: some people say it does matter because it would suggest that he was either paying for your services or paying to keep you quiet. or he was helping me because he cared for me. it could be one thing or the other. reporter: how would you describe your relationship with the prime minister? i had an affectionate relationship. meaning as someone that you care for and cares for you. reporter: but not an improper relationship, a sexual relationship? i wouldn t go in those details. those are private details. private details. this is world one live from london. first, they smashed into it. now they re going back to take some pictures of the damage. scientists are revisiting an old friend more than 300 million kilometers from earth. a fiery encounter in football s champion leg in milan as the league leaders. what happened?
