little help today from gretchen carlson. >> would you go as far as rush limbaugh did yesterday in saying this is the first president in modern times who is going to run a campaign against capitalism? >> well it certainly sounds like that's what he is doing. there's no question but that he's attacking capitalism in part i think because he doesn't understand how the free economy works. >> okay. that's 26 months of consecutive private sector job growth, 4 million jobs created detroit rescued, the dow up by almost 4600 points but the president could turn that around if he was smart enough to donate a little of his own campaign cash to his republican rival, because mr. obama could win a dine with the donald for free. a night at the temperature tower international hotel, and best of all, i'm not making this up dinner with donald trump and mitt romney. now, how could the president pass up a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn how the economy works from donald trump a man who has already filed for corporate bankruptcy four times. governor romny was in philadelphia to straighten out the education problems, and sing enjoying a brief serenade. ♪ >> or at least make some adjustments to his frozen mask. no word if the governor gave a rendition of who let the dogs out this time. here are the latest polls. the hispanic vote will be the key to winning in november and according to a poll, president obama has 61% of those voters compared to the 27% the governor has, and an marries poll has president obama leading romney in three important swing states. now, mitt romney is reportedly looking at ohio senator, bob, boom boom, portman as a possible vice presidential candidate which could help him win the state. bill portman did describe himself to his staff as so boring that i didn't even know i was boring. for more i'm joined by dean obeidallah, who comments on the day's events at the deansreport.com, and by ben adler, campaign correspondent with "the nation." gentlemen, it's great to have you both here. thank you so much. >> thanks for having us. >> i want to start off with the governor's appearance on the rush limbaugh show. is repeating whatever rush limbaugh says part of a strategy to actually make the far right like him more? >> yes definitely. mitt romney has deferred to rush limbaugh before if you look at climate change. he used to believe in climate change. when he admitted that in this campaign cycle, rush limbaugh said bye-bye nomination. that didn't turn out to be true but romney did dial that back and say he is not sure about climate change. so that is definitely part of his strategy. >> is it fair to say that rush could be the most powerful man in the gop. >> he could be. when rush attacked sandra fluke, and mitt romney's versus strong response was i wouldn't use those words. even mitt didn't have the backbone at that moment on a no-brainer. >> doesn't it seem like by saying the president is attacking can tallism what governor romney is trying to do is equate his own situation with bain with what capitalism is. >> if there is anyone who hates capitalism it is actually mitt romney. at bane he created at least a hundred thousand jobs. last month alone, president obama created more jobs in one month than all the time mitt romney was at bain capital. >> so how does he make these arguments stick? >> well, i think that there is a long history of republicans saying that any time democrats criticize a specific manifestation of something, they are cite sizing the very thing's existence. in other words if you oppose a certain war, you oppose america defending itself, or you oppose the military, so i think that romney is going to try to make this a larger theme and it will be hammered by all of the conservative talking heads like limbaugh, that obama hates capitalism just like they claimed during the bush years that anyone who is critical of the iraq war rated america or the military. >> the only people who are angrier at president obama than the ones who call him a socialist are actual socialists. you can really make the argument that the man saved capitalism. i would agree we needed a bigger stimulus package, but will this argue sway independents in the general? >> it's tough to say. i don't think people will be worried about this discussion at this point. although joe the plumber did call president obama as a candidate, a socialist. if we can't rely on a plumber, who can we rely on? >> yes he is not a plumber and his name is not joe. to win the white house you need 40% of the latino vote conceivably to get in. do you think that marco rubio could be the running mate to help romney make up some of this ground. >> he may be the running mate but i don't think he will help with the latino vote. there is a very big difference between cubans in florida and mostly mexican american latinos in the southwest and dominicans and porta ricans in the northeast. porta ricans heavily democratic. cubans in florida already voting for mitt romney. the real battleground is the mexican americans in the southwest. nevada, colorado, new mexico. those are really important states. bush did better than republicans typically do among them, because he had experience reaching out to them. romney is very unpopular among them right now. i don't think rubio helps that much with those voters. >> okay. now why would you say that governor romney is unpopular with mexican americans? >> self deportation, lack of -- there is a new ad out today by a super pac that deals with the latino issues attacking romney. it was very effective. with people that if you are in the it will tino community they are your villains. >> i think the republican's party's brand is really bad among latinos because of the immigration issue. look at mccain who is a moderate on immigration among republicans, and he did very poorly among latinos in 2008 because the republican parties image among latinos was one of intolerance. >> and you mentioned self deportation. it's ironic the government uses that phase considering what his grandfather did. he self deported all the way to mexico. >> yes. >> barack obama has increased deportations. barack obama has sent national guard troops to the border. he has been much tougher on undocumented immigrants than any other president in the past. >> i any there's one thing in that same poll which is a potential sign of concern for obama which is that latinos are less engaged in the election than the electorate as a whole. i think they view -- they -- on immigration they have, you know bad with obama and worse with romney. so there's no question that romney is going to win the latino vote, the question is how much -- >> yeah, it's close. let me move on to the vp sweepstakes, because now we're hearing a lot about mr. portman of ohio. the lloyd benson strategy to make him look that much more dynamic. is portman the guy? i know we have heard a lot of pundits really heat up to him in the last few days. >> i think if romney had any courage he would pick like kim kardashian. >> yes. >> senator portman does make mitt romney -- there's no threat of sarah palin anymore, and the former congressman for 20 years now he is in the senate. he had federal experience that mitt romney doesn't. so there are some matching points there. but adds nothing to the ticket besides another white guy. >> as charismatic as chris lavoie -- chrischristie. >> he would add some excitement to the ticket. but not to the sarah palin degree. i think the fact that he is islamphobic is something romney sees -- >> he is talking about whackos and crazies. some of these evangelicals really -- they hate gays the most and muslims second. >> i guess the point would be that romney doesn't have -- these are all real questions about christy. he doesn't have any real choices. if i were mitt romney the last thing i would do is pick anything in the bush administration. >> it seems exactly up his alley. looking back really quick if you were in the president's cabinet, what would you say would be the greatest response to these acquisitions that he lacks the experience to run this economy. mitt romney's experience at bain doesn't mean that he can run the country. how would he get bin laden by buying al-qaeda and firing him? what advice would you give? >> go after a specific record. how many jobs mitt romney said he created on his best day and his new economic plan is ridiculous it's austerity. and it doesn't work. >> i think obama needs to make the case that running a business and running a country are not the same thing. it just wasn't bain's goal to provide employment. his role was to create wealth. and you can say there is nothing wrong with that. and that romney was good at it, but it has absolutely nothing to do with being president. >> dean obeidallah and ben adler, great to have you both on the program. >> thanks. the recall election of scott walker is coming up in less than two weeks, and here is what president obama is saying about it . . .f >>(narrator) current tv presents the campaign ads that changed history, brought to you by spiriva handihaler. today's campaign ads accuse candidates of flip-flops, but back in 1952, the adlai stevenson campaign called it double-talk. >>yes...uh, i mean no. >>no, uh i mean yes. >>you're confused. >>you're confused >>(campaign ad narrator) don't you be confused! >>in a lot of campaigns since then we've seen this theme. the candidate said one thing and then did something else. >>(current narrator)flip-flop ads can pack a real punch when the candidate already has a reputation for changing his mind too often, like this 1972 nixon ad targeting george mcgovern. >>and that was effective because mcgovern changed his mind on his vice presidential candidate, and that fed into this idea that he was prone to changing his mind. >>(narrator) the mcgovern campaign had lots of other problems, but the flip-flop ads certainly didn't help. richard nixon took every state except massachusetts and the district of columbia. >>current tv's look at campaign ads that changed history is brought to you by spiriva battle speech right? >> scott walker needs to look beyond this recall race at a criminal corruption charge against him. he is right in the middle of crimes that he may have committed, and he won't answer the public. before anybody anoints him as the next sarah palin, number one he is not going to win this recall, number 2 he could be charged already. the d.c. parlor game about what is going to happen with national democrats here is useless to us. we don't care. we'll do this thing one way or another. scott walker -- six of his aids have been charged or convicted already. his best friend has been charged. his own spokesman has been immunized. and we have a governor who can't answer the question truthfully hey, governor, are you being charged with a crime? he won't say yes or no. so he has got to go before the grand jury, i fear. >> yeah, and you make a good point about the whole sarah palin factor, because if scott walker wins -- let me give this to you alex, if he ekes out a win does that make him a hero to anybody who hates collective bargains for public sector unions, we have heard it said before on fox, maybe even a possible vp candidate? >> i think it's fair to say he is already a hero in the conservative movement regardless of how the recall effort goes a lot of them have long thought that collective bargaining rights are a big problem and the fact that he -- you know upon taking office, rescinded them already makes him a hero, and if he wins the recall election, that just boosts his stature that much more and we'll see a lot of him between now and november. as far the vice presidential candidate, i think that is still a long shot. this is still someone who is a first-term governor, he is very polarizing. there are a lot of lists made in washington, i haven't seen a single one of those put scott walker on the list. i think there is a good reason for that. so any chatter about him being added to the romney ticket is just that. that's almost certainly not going to happen. >> well, one thing is clear, scott walker can't recall caring about the workers of wisconsin, but the workers of wisconsin care about recalling scott walker. gentlemen thank you for your time and expertise this evening, graeme zielinski, and alex roarty. both of you are very brilliant and thank you both for your incite. >> thanks. and you can't be a vice president from leavenworth. >> that's right.
